I am very new to metal detecting, and i need some advice. I have a Radio shack detector that i got for my birthday a few years back and want to get into the hobby. I've heard alot of you say the radio shack ones are crap, but i dont have the money to get a new/better one right now so i am going to work with what i have. I know of a few places i would like to go detecting, but dont know if its legal and dont want to feel like a dork, being 21. I live in San Antonio and need some reccomendations of what types of places are good spots and are ok to go on. i am interested in finding anything, i dont really care. please let me know what you think and if you can help me, it would be much appreciated. thanks again, -John

Hi John!

Don't let 'em tell you the radio shack detectors are crap. They're perfect for beginners and not terribly bad at all. I'm no expert on the subject, but I have 2 radio shack detectors. I found lots of coins in parks with mine. I found relics with mine that were in the ground for probably 100 years. Sure, they aren't the best detectors in the world, but they're good enough to find stuff with. I recently upgraded to a fisher CZ7, a high-end unit, because I'm looking for older deep coins. If I were looking for things anywhere from on the surface to 5 or 6 inches deep, I'd probably have stuck with the radio shack detector. And just so you know, most of the stuff I've found with the new detector was shallow enough I could have found it with the radio shack detector. I am new to the hobby too, but already addicted. Be careful, metal detecting can become an obsession ;D!

Welcome to the forum and metal detecting! I have a BH Discovery 1100 from Radio Shack.. I got it for Christmas..and I'm finding things in my yard (as the snow slowly thaws). Have fun!

Hello John,? May I make a suggestion?? There is a metal detecting club in San Antonio that meets once a month, and you might want to go to a few of their meetings.? You can call a man there by the name of Robert Gilland at (210) 337-1581 for information.? I think this club is fairly active, and very helpful to people entering the metal detector hobby.?

Probably the fastest way to learn how to use you detector would be using it at some of the parks and schools in the San Antonio area.? Please remember to always fill in your holes.? Wish you the best!? Kelley (Texas)? :)

HI John, Welcome to the forum and the Hobby. You may want to check, but I believe in San Antonio you need a permit to hunt the parks. The permit is free and lasts 90 days. Good luck and happy hunting.

Welcome, John :). One thing about San Antone is there is a lot of history there. W/help from the club and research, you will no doubt be posting some realy great finds on this forum. Happy Hunting and best of luck.

Hey John. Welcome to the best forum on the web. For quantity I have found the local playground is the best. And nobody bothers you except to ask the usual questions about the hobby. I'm a newbie at this too and I think you can learn alot here. I have.
