Hey Cappy,

During the Depression, when so many banks failed, EVERYBODY hid their money close to home. Any money gotten "Under the table" is likely to be hidden so as to be unreportable. As was stated before, before banks became common, people hid their money close to home.It is not uncommon to hear about some old person who lived alone dying at home (two similar cases I know of). In one instance, when the cleanup crew threw out the raggedy sofa, they found over $100,000 in cash stuffed inside. In the other, there were sealed envelopes hidden all over the house with cash totaling about $60K (In NYC).

My personal experience was during a Storage Unit Auction here in SoCal. When the lock was cut and the door rolled up, there were some wood loading pallets, two folding chairs, two kilos of Cocaine, and a large stack of $100 dollar bills (they wound up being a bit over $60,000). I offered $5, but they had to call the police.

I can think of MANY examples of reasons for people to hide valuables (even in the 21st Century).

Best-Mike

PS

Another one I just remembered: This was recent too. When a woman surprised her mother with a new bed, and mom freaked out because she said the old bed had close to a million dollars hidden in it. I know they were searching the landfill, but I never heard whether they found the money or not.

Reminds me of when I cleaned out our closet and threw away an old pillow.
Three weeks later my wife asked me where the pillow was.

Turns out she had hidden $3,000.00 dollars cash in it.

I said :cussing: "Are you crazy?" .... :angry5: "You should have told me" .... :cussing: "What were you thinking anyway?"

She said, tearfully "I was saving up to surprise you with a new dredge."

:'( That's another time I wish I could take back what I had said and done. :BangHead:

Just imagine an old hermit wandering around the inside and outside of his cabin muttering "It's got to be a place no one would ever think to look". That where he hid his leather bag with all the double eagles!

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

I have been in house(some what old) that have secret compartments in closets even secret rooms behind false doors and crawl spaces between attics and ceilings. A lock box in an underground vault(in barns and wood sheds) which can be locked with all sorts of mechanisms.

I let my imagination run wild with possibilities to figure new and old sites to hide things. Think of "How to hide anything from anyone" and "How to find anything that can be hidden" and you will be able to find things with a little bit of research and time well spend hunting for it. Not all treasures are like a secret Swiss bank account. If I can hide it, someone can find it.

I gotta go, there is a treasure out there with my name on it. There's one with your name on it also. Maybe even in an area that you traveled well over the years and you never realized it.

How to hide anything. Got the book on order with a local book store. I'll find out how some of the old timers hide things as well as the ways that I already know.

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

I still have the entire "Where is my neighbor's hidden cache?" topic on my hardrive. Lots of good ideas in there. Looks like it's been deleted.

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

think of when gold was illegal to own -- 1933 to 1974 * folks had to hide it ** also you got cathouse operators , illegal book makers (gambling), loan sharks, moonshine and dope sellers and all sorts of folks making money that either can not or will not report it as income --thus they can not have too rich a life style or it will draw the irs's attention ---so they gotta stash their cash .

then you got greedy grubbers --freindless pack rat types that trust no one (including banks) --- lots of old folks got "burnt" by the banks when they folded during the depression and so they never trusted em again --they put their cash into hiding --not reporting their income as much as possible to prevent taxation on it --say a dairy farmer who sold eggs on the side of the road by his home as a "side bussiness" to his "main" diary bussiness --that side egg money was "off" the books stashed for a rainy day .

I want my bed back...lol. When I was a young boy, my mother told us that she and her brother had taken all the coins that they got as allowance and wrapped them like they were collector pieces and put them in a shoe box...One day, we were playing out in the barn and found the shoebox with all the coins....it was a treasure to us, we were going thru some hard times then...Sure wish we could have saved them, but money was what we needed at the time....

Apparently alot of stuff is hidden in barns or out buildings....near the main house.

Thanks for posting.

Re: Where do people 'hide' cash and treasures?

When my Wife and I were taking off the paneling to start restoration on our home here in Texas we found a in wall ironing board closet recessed in the wall behind the cedar paneling in the kitchen. I thought that was really cool until I pulled the small narrow closet out of the wall the next day. A small round cookie tin with two plastic soldiers a little car and 70cents in dimes was at the bottom. It seems the bottom board of the closet was loose as it fell off when I pulled the little cabinet out of the wall allowing access to a hollow space in the wall under the cabinet. None of it was worth much except that two dimes were mercury and 3 of them were Rosie's. According to my wife the cookie tin was worth more than anything else. The Home was built in 1947. I just thought I would share since I really enjoy some to the stories y'all let me enjoy.
