Where to put the groved rubber mat in a home build sluice?

Hey hunter since we live here in Indiana and were more apt to be looking for flour here my advice would be to run that groove matting the entire length of your sluice I'm not sure since you didn't mention this (but what type of grooved matting are you using?) deep "V" matting is said to be the best to use.
I'm personally running miners carpet and its catching microscopic pieces and this wasn't by choice its just what came with my sluice and I always use one of my pans at the exit end of my sluice to make sure I'm not losing gold.
