Where to start

I am new to detecting and I am looking for advice on where to start the hunt. I have access to land where a lot of Confederate Troops camped near a river. My area is on the first high ground where a large creek branches off of the river. The top of this ridge is flat and has some very large oaks in a small area, would this be a good place to start? I am in N.C.

The high ground is where I would start first, then work towards the river, cause the higher ground you know was a good vantage point, but the camped in higher points trying to avoid misquotes and bugs while sleeping.
