Detector(s) used
Garrett AT Max
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I'm in a bit of a dilemma; I currently use a Garrett Ace 250, which has been very kind to me, but feel it's time to upgrade. I'm looking at a Whites Spectra v3I, which runs about $1600. I'm also looking at a Garrett At pro that runs about $600. I have a buddy with who has the AT pro and it does great. Which would be the better detector? I know the spectra has more bells and whistles which I like, but I'm curious if it is worth the money. I just want to be able to hit the deepest I can as well as to be able to discriminate from junk. I detect lot of old homesteads and Civil War areas here in Kentucky. I also plan to detect the beaches in Florida for old ship wreck artifacts this summer. Which detector would be best for me? Thanks or any input.

Thanks For yours all help. I went ahead and ordered the pro after talking with several people. Hopefully it will have great results; if not you all have broadened my horizons to different detetors. Thanks again.

if your looking for depth then i would go with the fisher 70, f75, or the teknetics T2, these are all great machines with awesome depth, our i should say the ones i know most about, not going to fix the junk problem tho but when your relic hunting that is to be expected.

Just realized, one of my practices is to check with consumer reports prior to purchasing certain items. I will have to see if they reviewed detectors and use that as an additional information source. most libraries carry the mags. on line you can find out which month the item has been reviewed in.

If you want a good all around machine that is capable of doing a variety of tasks well, depth, discriminate, programmable, different coils options, etc and you don't plan on replacing it. Then the Whites is the best choice. This will not be your last machine, but it will be all you will ever need to meet any land metal detecting situations. Eventually you will also want a water machine, but that won't be for a few years. If you get the White's now you won't need to "upgrade" your land detector as you get more into the hobby. Good luck with your choice. I'm excited that you are taking the time, spending the money, and trying to do it right! H Digs :)

I started out with a used Bounty Hunter and I found stuff. Purchased a new Whites Matrix M6 and later now a Whites MXT Pro because it has the three modes, Coins and Jewelry, Relics mode and Prospecting (gold) mode. I got the Pro because it includes the Tone function. Whites has a two year warranty, which I've never used.
The White line is Made in USA and both the ones I've listed above have a Salt beach setting.

Frankly I think all the modern detectors are pretty good.
