Which metal detector for a beginner ?

I live in australia and all metal dectors here are expensive and quite hard to find my budget it $400 which of these are best? Ill be buying my detector in 1-2 days

Minelab X-Terra 305 $395

garret ace $250

Whites Coin master $324

Whites Coin Master Pro $445

bounty hunty quick sliver $200

These are the ones i have found Which should i go for? Are tips? Please help

Hey guys i forgot to say that the ace 250 is $379 for $269 you get the ace 150,

Also i have found a x terra 505 for $400 Used If i got the x terra 505 over the 305 is there a difference? Like would i find more things with the 505 Sorry for my noob questions

What ever you get make sure it has a ground balance adjustment. I myself would go with a used top of the line detector. If you look you can get one within your budget and you will have all the detector you will need for years .

I hear australia has high mineral ground thus one would get the best results with a machine with auto or adjustable ground balance. You would be happier with the mini lab, because the others mentioned have preset(non adjustable) ground balance. The xterra 505 would be good. If u buy used verify that it works correctly before purchase.

What im trying to decipher is how much better is the 505 than the 305 I'd much rather have a new unit, However if the 505 is worth getting used ill get it i guess, Also the owner has said the 505 works fine but im leaning towards getting a new 305 and if i really like it after 3-4 months get a 705 if i really like it, Thats my plan i think

For that price u get the annoying bell town and cheap kiddie detector for 399 u can grt the xterra305 like the poster said about.

I wouldn't recommend the ace line of detectors to anyone. I met up with a guy who got the 350 and hes regreting it right now.

If you think they are cheap kiddie detectors then you don't know anything about them...I don't care if you used an ACE 250 or not...it is a great beginner detector.

Obviously I know bc I had one, It was the biggest waste of money I ever spent.

Why waste your money on a single frequency one when u can get the xterra and change the coil and chage the frequency. Its a no brainer. Especially when they are not much more than the ace.

From a former ace user dont waste your money. That minelab is ten times the machine for very small price increase. The used 505 is a no brainer. Get the minelab , there I said it again. The ace series would be a paper weight in heavily mineralized soil.

About a month ago I bought my wife a Fisher F 2 . We love it. It has the screen and the low tone for iron and all of that is new stuff to me. Mean while I stopped in at a pawn shop and saw a detector that I was not familiar with. Oh boy has this been a shocker. This little guy is one bad ass ! Can I say that ? I has 2 knobs and one toggle switch and it kicks butt and takes names. It is the TESORO SILVER Umax and boy oh boy oh boy is it one good detector ! Wife turned it on. I set the discriminate , and she took off like a Pinned Up Dog ! digging everything !

The 505 i found is a bit rusted so i wont be getting it, However i found used minelab x terra 70 in 10/10 condition it ends in 1 day and a bit if it doesnt go over my price ill get it, If it does ill be buying the 305 brand new.

Good choice I've read nothing bu great reveiws of the xterra line. I have a safari and absolutely love it. You won't regret it!!

The only one on your list that I have used is the Ace 250. I was very disappointed in that machine (sorry Garrett, and other posters!). My 30 year old machines were much better in my opinion. I would as a minimum (if you can afford it) the Ace 350 with the better coil.

I quickly gave that Ace 250 to my brother and bought a Minelab Etrac - certainly no comparison there at all, but a demonstration of my disgust with the 250.

Do you have an option of something used

I am using the 250 right now, and it's an okay machine (still no silver), but my next machine will have a numeric target ID. Just seems like another way to help you identify before you dig, rather than relying on just sound and jumping cursors. Also, get a Garrett Pro-Pointer for sure, as others have said.

A wise man would tell you to learn the sounds! One of the deficiencies of the Ace is that you do not have that very broad range of sounds for the discerning ear - which you can only learn over time by use.

Use numeric target ID only as supplemental information. Don't leave anything in the ground strictly because of target ID. If you do, please let me know where it was

I have news Friends, I Bought a used minelab x terrace 505 Great condtion phew scratches i may repaint it, But its working perfectly i got it for $350+20 shipping so its perfectly in budget. Cant wait to get my hands on it!
