Whites Goldmaster Vsat battery upgrade?

I have a Whites Vsat (1995 version) and am tired of buying AA batteries for it. Has anyone gone ahead and tried a rechargeable battery li-ion or li-po in it?
Thought of rechargeable AA batteries but I think li-ion or li-po might be a better choice.
Thoughts?

There's lots of room in the battery compartment, so shouldn't be hard to make a 12v, 3 cell Li-ion pack for it. I've been thinking of doing that for my GM-2, and GM-3. I already have a li-ion pack for my GMT.
