in the woods. A 1873 seated. It was my first signal when I got there. At first I thought maybe it was play money. You can see the silver plating is nearly gone and its thinner than a genuine dime. After that I found a nickle and a few memorials.

Cool Find!
I got a fake seated also, was silver, good condition but only 60% of genuine weight.
HH

Never know what you dig up. I found a couterfiet Morgan before and a Barber half.

I guess a dime back then could buy alot more...there was a guy in NJ that was counterfiting nickels...I think that was in the 1950s.

It may also have to do with the way counterfiting laws are written. If I remember correctly the laws only apply to a certain denomination of money and up. I think someone on T-Net posted it at some point.

Man, there must be a lot of fakes out there! lol. Neat find!

The Chinese have been known to do a lot of reproductions--mostly low mintage high value coins, including a seated lib dime of some particular date. It has been said that there are thousand of the fakes out there in collections, and never to buy that particular one without verification. These are supposed to be particularly well done, and meant to deceive.

might have been plated to make jewellry.

What kind of reading does the coin make on a metal detector meter? My hunting partner found a counterfit seated half and it showed up on his meter as a zinc cent.

:icon_scratch: does it stick to a magnet ??? interesting bogus seated :o

in 1860's the average pay was about $15 a month so that dime was an hours wages
that would be like a $20 dollar bill today

Even though it's fake it's still a piece of history!! I'd like to have one for my collection.

....maybe some foreign power attempting to destabilize the economy at that time.......or some overactive adolescent in high school metalshop :tongue3:

Counterfeit.webp

Just do a search on Google and you will see many articles from the archives of the NY Times and other publications like this one from 1881.

It must have been very profitable....unless you got caught!

Nice Find!!
