Who's a marker?

I'm not.. What a waste of time - I started sorting halves by looking at each one. I have slowly moved to rim sorting. My wife and I went through 4 boxes tonight in about an hour. I just don't see why people mark their coins. When I used to get halves from Well Fargo, 90% of them had black dots.. Terrible.

it definately adds time when you "mark" your coins, but at the same time... If you really want to get serious about doing this, it is not a bad idea. Out of all the coins I have ever looked through, I only marked one box. about four or five weeks ago it seems. Last night i ordered the usual two boxes from Wells, and low and behold...... 30-40% of the first box was my own marked coins... the weird part was that I still found 3-40%.....

*short answer*
Make sure you are dumping at a different bank, not just a different branch of the same bank.

I personally think marking is pointless in LA theres millions of halves and I never dump at my supply chain.

I guess if you are in a rural area or smaller metropolitan area with lots of hunters it might help...but even then what does it get you? Sure you can say, "I've seen these before", but I don't see how that helps if you are in a small area either. Maybe you decide to get out of the game for a month or drive 50 miles to new supply banks....but then you miss a chance of a collection dump circulating in your area you are now skipping over because of "marking".

I just dont think it serves any purpose because you never know what will be in the box and it ruins any value the coin has for someone else.

Look at it another way....if you kept getting boxes that were like 50% "your marks" but kept having silver in them, would you change up supplies? No only a fool would. If you keep getting endless skunks, thats the time to change up your supply routine and why do you need to mark coins to make that determination?

I completely agree Heed.... I do not think it is worth the extra time it takes. With that said, I want to learn how all the different banks, coin services, etc work in my area, and marking coins is the only way, that I can think of anyway, to try to better understand, where they come from, where they go, and what happens in the meantime... I would love any feedback on this subject possibly from a veteran or two... What are some ways to really educate yourself about the coins in your area? In other words, how would I find out where they come from, where they go, what branches send them where, what service companies get them from where, take them to where..... ETC...

just ask the service manager or the merchant teller what armored service brings their coins and if its the same company everyday. Most are but i think I have one bank that has 2.

I spoke to some operations managers for Brinks and I think the other company was Loomis at their cash vault / coin processing centers.

Theres differing opinions from members of this board, but this is how it works for the major banks in Los Angeles.

Banks A, B, C, D use Brinks for cash / coin delivery and processing.

Brinks has separate "vaults" at the processing center for banks A, B, C, D

The money is never co-mingled at the processing centers it is kept in seperate vaults , I was told this by the Brinks operations manager. He said we dont own the money, the banks and their customers do, we keep it seperate for that reason + it would be an accounting nightmare.

He also said since we dont own the money we just process it, wrap it, and box it, we are not allowed to "cull & replace" silver, it is against the law he said. I dont know if thats federal or CA law but whatever.

If you want to circulate your coins theres a couple things you can do to improve your chances

1) Never, ever, ever, ever,........ever x25.....dump at your suspply bank chain. Not any other branch it doesnt matter it all goes to the same processing center vault. It HAS to be a different chain completely.
2) Find out who they get their coin from, meaning their own vault or another bank. For example, one time I went into a CitiBank branch asking if they had any loose halves. They said, "Try wells fargo next door, we order our coins from their cash vault" In other words make sure your bank isnt sourcing coins from your dump bank.

Those would be my top 2 pieces of free advice....to get the rest you have to buy my book for 3 payments of 19.95.....j/k #2 is really just a subset of #1.

The other things i can think of are do as much volume as you can afford to and stand to do, remember it has to be fun, i enjoy high volume, others may not, and of course you could move to the NorthEast and move in on CnC's banks that would greatly increase your Ag prospecting :-)

ok time for an early lunch and 7k dump run, I am starving !!!!

I have a 1988 Saleen but it's been just sitting there decomposing. Hadn't driven it in 2 years. Wished I had the funds to restore it.

On the topic.. I do mark them.. and it does give me a picture of getting my skunks back. The system had been working until recently. Probably a bunch of new CRHers popped up as finds have been low of late. Also I do it.. to discourage new CRHers who find a skunk marked box for the first time.

There is no permanent damage from using permanent marker. Ink can be removed. Plus I only do it on beat up casino coins that have no collector value. So no harm.. no foul. I think that people do complain because they are frustrated in seeing the marked coins in a skunk box which is part of the plan to discourage CRHing for newbies.

If you marked every coin in a box and months later, you got 990 of those coins back, but the other 10 unmarked coins were Walkers, would you stop ordering boxes, because you are getting so many of your previously searched coins back? I don't think so. Mark away fellas, while you are doing that, I will search more coins.

That's why I said.. for newbie CRHers who find them in a skunk box. It could (never said will) stop them from getting knee deep into the hobby. I am definitely not promoting this hobby.. LOL
