I see some pretty big numbers on that site. Far more than Vick killed.
Not long ago I tried to get a dog from a pound. They wouldn't let me have it because I didn't have proof of a vet. They had rather kill the animals than send them home with someone without a vet.

This is a touchy subject...most animals that are killed in shelters are there by some fault of the owner
Some animals are simple too sick to bring back to health. Also the biggest factor is the sheer number of animals the shelters have to deal with.
Want to reduced the unfortunate deaths?
A] sterilize you pets
B] don't buy dog and cats from mall pet stores....they use puppie mills
C] chip id your animals
D] If you can't keep your animal don't. repete don't. dump them in a secluded/wooded area - they will eaten by predators or killed by cars or put down in a shelter
E] if you can't keep them find homes for them!
F] buy your animals from professional breeders - you may even get them for free - I did - a full blood chihuahua
G] inspect the breeder's operation - look around - if anything looks off - say no thank you and leave.
