Why Are Chicken Eggs Tapered?

Stayed up many a night trying to reason this out...

A round egg would roll over ledges whereas a tapered egg will roll in a circle...

Also eggs are soft when first moving down the egg track and become tapered by the sphincter muscle action as it squeezes and pushes the egg out...

(Or maybe its to keep the bum from slamming shut)

Can you imagine the sound from a henhouse if the bum did slam shut, it would be like a continuous round of applause at laying time
