The entire hobby is an adventure...researching where to look, not knowing what you will find, trying to identify what is found!

Plus like you said, being outdoors is the sugar-coating...

treasure is where you find it,

I love to learn things. I like doing research when possible. I like being outside as much as possible. The exercise is very helpful, arthritis. The history that you read and sometimes get an opportunity to hold in your hand. Then somewhere along the line, as the years pass, you might have a chance to share what you have learned with someone else. Happy Hunting to All

For me its the thrill and being outside. Also that feeling when you hold something real in your hand. Its great! What a rush! I love old and antique things, so its all of my favorites combined.

It's the not knowing what you will find....Digging up history. Butttons, coins etc.....

finding things that most people go through life not knowing they exist.. plus im not working at this time and this is a good way to pass time.

Well, I just got my detector, so I can't speak from experience or anything, but here's the reason I bought my detector: I live on the same land that my family has lived on for at least five generations & since my kinfolks have told me they thought there used to be a cabin located at a certain location on the place, but they don't know who it was that lived there, I wanted to see if I could figure out who it was. I've done a lot of combing through Federal census records, Indian census records, Indian court records, etc. just trying to get a feel for where folks may have been living. But because this is rural area & always has been, and because this was Indian Territory, the records are few & far between. Anyway...that's why I picked up a metal detector. I just want to find my people & know more about their history. I'm not locked into this specific site being somewhere my family lived, because anyone who lived there is a part of the history of my tribe, whether or not they were my family & whether or not they were Indians.

Kinda like a vice for me. Just the thought that at any time you can find silver or gold. Extremely addictive stuff. Worse than gambling I guess.

Preserving and recovering history.

My probation officer thinks it will keep me out of trouble :laughing7:

find stuff and get away from the ole lady

well, some answers I didn't expect. it's why I love Tnet.

For me it's similar to fishing, it's the thrill of the hunt, not knowing what you will be digging up whether trash or treasure, it's all good either way.

Yh that's definitely true for me as well.

Lol, I agree with almost all the answers here, plus its also a good way to get out with the family and teach some values of hard work, diligence, and patience that are all too undervalued in todays society at large.

I like the thrill of the hunt. In wonder about what the person was doing when they dropped what ever I find, how long they looked for it and if they even knew they dropped it. Also my Dad used to do it when I was young and I thought it was such a cool thing to find stuff from the past.

Now I wanna go fishin!! think I'll go dig some worms. will let ya know how big & how good it tastes

For the times like the one in Oklahoma when I was huntin on an old homestead near the infamous Hughes Ranch, safe haven for Bert Casey and other bad actors. Pretty good signal and dug very carefully until I had the tops of 6 zinc fruit jar lids revealed, arranged 2 by 3 about 8 inches down. The best part was to sit there and fantasize for a few minutes about what the fruit jars below would contain. Turns out that really was the best part, as it was only six fruit jar lids. That would make a reasonable person give the hobby up, but wait, those lids could be a marker for the real treasure, if you could only figure out what they mean, maybe. And that's a fair example of how the hunt goes on for folks like us, I reckon.

Sounds good as well!

Diddo to all of the above, I gave up dirt hunting and went to the water... and the adventure is like being a kid again. I can fish and hunt for treasure at the same time........
