Why the extra ring on the back of this military button?

I'm hoping someone can explain this to me only one of the three I found in a very small area have this extra ring

Probably a spare...ring would be used to hold with string or something else that held

the soldier's spare buttons....

I've seen buttons found with that ring on it that go back to the civil war period. Around here the boys say they were sewn into the inside of the coat and were used as spares if they were needed.
