This is probably a stupid question - why would someone make a magnifying glass that makes things look smaller ? I got it at a yard sale the other day .

It's called, appropriately enough, a reducing lens. Used quite a bit by photographers, designers, and others who need a quick and easy way to get a "step back" view of items they're working on.

It makes things sharper to the eye, sometimes even big is hard to see, you need it to be small and detailed, sharped for your eyes, but ya its probably just an oddball joke.
