Wife says NO to me buying a MD for trip to Panama City Beach, BUT.....

Mine told me I had to choose between her and treasure hunting. I felt really bad about that for awhile but I got over it (it did take 2 or 3 days though). I haven't even missed her for years now.

Ya probably ought to go thru her closet. I'm sure there is lots of old unused stuff in there you could pawn and buy a detector with.

My wife bought my Minelab Excalibur 1000 for my Birthday a little more than a few years back, and she has been reaping the rewards ever since, expensive watches, rings and other jewelry, not to mention that very nice 4 real coin she now wears around her neck (gold chain found separately).
The detector she bought me, more than paid for itself in the first winter (November baby), season of beach detecting. Then came summer, and I started diving with it...

Just tell her this story, and have her buy the detector for you! ;D

1st mistake----You thought "better ask the wife" ???
2nd mistake---You asked the wife. ;)
Bet she doesn't ask to buy the shoes, and purses.

It is rather expensive to rent a good detector, a weeks rental will pay for a low end detector and be a real good downpayment on the better ones, especially if your renting a water detector.

Consider an entry level or check ebay. I would get a good one they hold their value and you can trade up. All 3 of the ones I have hold their value, I just finished trading my BHID for a new Sovereign GT with the 15" WOT, akaline battery pack, chest bag, and padded ML bag. I got about 70% of what I paid for the BHID towards the trade in.

buy one , then tell her , its rented, worried about it after you get back, what to do with it,,

get a divorce, treasure is worth alot more then a wife that wears the pants.

......first, put every thing you own, ever thing you may want to own, in your mother's name or give them to your friends, quit your job so you have no money ........After the divorce you want have any of them any way! :'(

What is she wanting before she goes on this trip? women allways want a new wordrobe!! I guess you are putting a stop to that!! ;D Goodluck to ya!! have fun on the trip.

hi Joe,
I only got into detecting because of my lady !! her idea of the perfect holiday is CHILL !! sun, plastic beds ,oil my back and 2 novels , now me being a typical man i would admire the sights around the pool :P :-[ but then get bored after a while i would go down to the beach with one or both of my little girls . I would chat to detectorists one of them let me have a play !! and then hook line and sinker i got the bug ::) no longer would i be bored on holidays :D So i bought a sov off ebay , then a surfmaster , i had a few good finds as she suffered the apartment sink full of sand and discoloured coins ::) slowly the wify was coming round to the idea (though i still LOOK like a nurd ) :-[! but it seemed like a good game :-[ When i bought my first 1000 i got the "How many bloody detectors do you need " ?? But the worm turned when i pinged on a gold chain worth £2K , oh and also the diamond and gold rings that "wont come off my fingers dad " !!!!! :D, Now they have some real good BLING !! so in fairness Bless her :-[ she said i could have sold the goodies myself and bought the new scally 1000 with yellow phones but instead she bought it me for xmas and also has just put £200 towards my new Ex SE for my birthday present, I suppose that way she dont feel toooo bad about mugging me when i come home smiling !! I never pocket my finds instead i convert euros/£ and keep them and scrap gold in a secret place so that my hobby actually PAYS for itself when i need anything new ;D :)

Thanks for the support/ideas everyone. I think I got her to break down and let me get one. I'm currently leaning towards the Tesoro Vaquero. Is this a good, all-around "Surf and Turf" MD? Anything a little less expensive that will work well?

Break down and let you get one?????????? As others have suggested, "Deep Six her."

As for the Vaquero, it is a great detector for the grass or dry sand. It will be unstable in the salt wet sand since it has not saltwater mode. You could try turning down the sensitivity a lot, but this will lose a lot of depth too. The Tesoro Tiger Shark would be perfect for the beach and dry land searching. You can get it wet. One ring for her and maybe she'll tell you to continue finding her stuff. Suggest you start a secret savings account........

Another detector you might look at depending on what you are willing to spend is the White's Beach Hunter ID water proof up to 25' and retails for $799.00 Well good luck ;D

HAHAHAHA that is funny. Unless she is the bread winner in the family, or the trip is like an anaversary or something, just buy what ever you want. I can see her point if its the only family vacation you will take with her that, is why not only did I buy a medal detector recently, but told my wife Im going away for a week next month, out west, to use it. She can use some alone time with the kid anyway. Its good for the both of them. And me too! ;D We will still go on our family vacation later.

Either you guys are all single (after reading all the posts makes sense) or don't value your marriage very much. I have always been the main bread winner in my family but I never put metal detecting before my family. My wife and I always discussed big ticket items and unless we both agreed we didn't purchase. You don't know this guys situation and perhaps getting a new detector might stretch the budget too thin. Lay off already.

Just a wild guess on my part but I think the author is taking the ribbing in the good natured spirit that it was intended as.
