Wild Boar Head

aw---shooting em? you miss out on all the fun that way---get you a good foot long home made "tooth pick" blade made from a saw mill blade or old leaf spring from a car and a few good bay dogs and couple of mean "catch" dogs then take them down the old way---catch em & "stick em"---folks say its too mean these days but the pig at least gets a fair chance to get even that way---those russian boars are mean critters ---man eaters if they get the chance---we doggie thats some fun----Ivan

Probably not for the average Joe, or Jane, :o,
I have heard of big Boar's even cutting the legs of
people on horseback with their tusks, when in a
fighting situation.
I knew a AR man, who used to chase the sows or
pigs down on foot, when he was a boy in the mountains.

well I must admit its a fast hot blooded younger mans game---it not for the crippled up old folks like I am now ---but dang it was fun----some folks say you gotta be a bit crazy to do it ----I say you don't have to be--but it helps--- ;D ;D ;D Ivan

I aint never stuck one that was bayed but have seen it done. Back when folks ran most of their hogs loose in the bottoms around here everyone had a mark and you marked the ears of the hogs and it was all recorded at the court house. Fossis, did y'all have a hog claim and a mark? Our's was a crop/split on the rite and a 1/2 under crop to the left...d2

Fossis,

That is one scary wall decoration :o
I think I would rather go up against the moutain lion.
Better yet...a timber wolf ;D

My family never ran any out in the wild, but I
remember the old timer's talking about how they cropped
the hogs ears.
And old stories I have heard of hogs getting under the
houses at night & keeping people awake. ( no underpinning).
One of my jobs as a little boy on the farm, was to haul
water & pour it in a mudhole to let the hogs keep cool in
the hot summer months.
And yes we had to try & ride them too, (hard to do),
without a saddle. ;D

Facinating read folks! I bet even the Big Bad Wolf would be afaid of those things. Scaaaarrrry!

Timberwolf, I'd like to see!

I don't know how big the hogs are that you folks are shooting with a .22 but the pigs around here require a somewhat larger caliber. Sure, if a pig is penned up and you can get close enough, a .22 behind the ear will work but, bringing down a 400-pound Russian boar on a dead run at 100 yards is tough with a .22. The little havelina pigs might be droppable with small calibers but, unless you get lucky, the Russians are much tougher. I pitty the fool that walks up to one of these guys with the intent of stabbing it. That has to be a Darwin move and that's why you don't see too many folks doing it. ;D

My buddy shot a large hog in the shoulder with a 30-30,
it was charging out of the brush, it kept going.
We don't have Javalinas in this country.
I think when you get close enough to "stick one" that the
hog dogs have it held by the ears & feet, or you could lose some
"good body parts"
The hogs here are mixed Russian & feral, some get quite
large.

If I ever move down south, or they move up here, I'm taken up hog hunting. Man that looks like fun! I use to ride hogs too, fossis. It's a lot harder then it looks. You got to jump on, grap their ears and dig your hooks in and every once and awhile, bonk them on the nose when they turn and try to bite you. ;D

you sould put your cowboy hat on him. lol ever get a picture of the kid who shot the hog bigger than hogzilla ???

Hey Bean, the way they are multiplying, they will
probably move north gradually, yep, it's an art form to
ride a hog. ;D
