Wildlife, (one not for the weak stomachs)

Got these pic's yesterday, white pelicans on the lake, coyote in town, little Owl that hit a barbed wire fence & was hung up so badly it lost an eye, I cut it free, but sadly it didn't survive.
It probably had hung there all morning long, it was around 10:00 am when i found it.

Hardly ever saw Pelicans in Oklahoma until about the last 15 years or so, but now it's on their migration path I guess. Sorry about the owl, but he was young and death is a part of nature. It means something that coyotes are moving more into urban areas, but I don't know what. I always liked their way of streaking off just out of rifle range, then sitting down and lookin at you as if to say 'Well, your move! Good pics.

I just noticed pelicans a few years ago flying through, i guess the wire was too small for the little owl's 'night vision', but like you say, death is a part of nature.
Coyotes just tore up my Son's neighbors dog the other day, coming in closer to civilization all the time, (or we're moving in on them more), both I guess.

Owls are my favourite bird but at least you saved it from further suffering

It seems that their biggest mortality rate is being hit by cars, they like to catch prey, then linger in the road too long, & unfortunately barbed wire fences.

Ahh, poor little guy. We had a great-horned in our fence also, We found him and untangled him just to watch him die. Raptors are fragile, once they have been injured, the mortality rate is high, even with care. Nature wants them healthy and free. And abundent coyotes are one of the reasons my cats are house cats, hawks and owls are another reason. One cat gets to go for walks around the yard, under supervision, because she actually understands what the fence is for. she's small, and a red-tail hawk swooped in to get a good look at her, thankfully I was near and frightened it off. we humans with our fences, cars and housecats just don't fit well with nature.

There is a rehibilation center for wildlife over in Ar, but we don't have one around close.
I had to 'put down' a red-tail hawk last year, I think it had been poisoned, it couldn't fly.

That's a shame about the owl. I've seen deer caught up in fences but never a bird. As far as the yote goes, well they're not welcomed around here and a small game license with a year round season keeps em in check, sort of.

We have a 'year round season' on the coyotes also, but they are still numerous.

Fossis, That Owl looks like one that became a good friend of mine, had a bad wing. I called him Hoot and he loved raw hamburger. He stayed with me about three months, I never caged him. He stayed in the area for a few months and finally decided to find a mate I guess.

I like to watch quail as one of my favorites, but owls are smart and can become a wild pet, but I WOULD NEVER CAGE ONE. Unless it was to protect it until it could care for itself. Most wild life do revert back to the wild if we allow it. Gnewt

That's a good story, i put up a hollow log with a top on it & a little owl stayed in it for about two years, then moved on somewhere else.
