Will the poor economy affect the metal detector hobby?

Less detectors are probably being sold, I'm sure.

Someone posted something recently about people not trusting banks and potentially burying their money.
I find this ludicrous and highly unlikely.

With the layoffs there might be more detecting done. Of course, that can't last for ever. I don't doubt at all that some will bury/hide money or valuables.

Yes if there is no work you can always try detecting you could be lucky and find something worth a lot or at least put some money in your pocket..........So then the sales for the detectors will increase........

It seems everyone is saying detecting will increase but new detector sales will eventually drop.

Actually, just before Christmas Metal Detectors was among the top 10 searches on yahoo! And with as many as I've seen on the beach down here on the Gulf, there just might end up being more competition out there!

I don't forsee anyone burying money...you put 10 dollars in the ground its libel to come out worth only 1...who knows?

I think if you are laid off the detectist will find more time to get out and hunt. So with us out hunting we may help it some with buying gas and when we are out we just may stop and buy something to eat and drink so we will boost the economy a little. So get out and so some hunting....mlayers

I don't think folks immediately think "I'm laid off. I think I'll take up metal detecting."

But if advertising in the hobby feeds these Get Rich Quick dreams in order to move more detectors in a tough economic time, then perhaps more folks will start thinking that.

I couldn't see detector sales going anywhere but down. But perhaps sales of cheaper models will go up.


It's tough to know. Will it affect my permission rate for sites? That's another good question.

How tough is the economy? Will the MD'ing mfr's be justified in seeking a "bailout"? Do they need to?

Eh, maybe this maddeninig rate of construction, development and ever-growing traffic patterns around here will ease. One can only hope.

If you read my bottom line it will say..LET NO ONE KNOW WHAT WERE OR WHEN.. i have never posted one of my find's on Tnet. or any place else so if they are on Tnet it is up to them to tell not me. I've heard of some who made their living at detecting but I didn't meet them personally.

I think there are some here on TNet who could live off CW digs. Many of the finds I see posted here are worth very serious money.

The problem of course is always health insurance. Who in the heck can afford it on their own? Probably not many of us.

But back on subject, yes, there are those who find a lot. Most of us here just dig rusty coins and such that are usually not worth a lot. There are others who hunt and find the big game. Too bad most never post here.

What do you think, MB? Will more owners decide that they want to recover any Treasure themselves? Will it be tougher to get permission?
