I found this coin last Thursday.
It was first ID'd as perhaps a Continental copy (contempory) of William I 'Lionheart' Scxottish Hammered silver penny.
Well now they think it is the real thing. Still not 100% sure though.
It seems the portrait on the coin is unusually finely done, and his hair is a bit different.
This coin came from a field that had a Medieval moated manor house on it, now long gone. And in this corner of said field I have found about two or three hammered pennies of this period, each year for the past three years.
So looks like it might be a scattered hoard.
I thought I would have a go on there on Thursday, and found another two!
The other one is a short cross of Henry II, about the same date.
12thC - 13thC.

'You lot' come up with the most stupendous finds!

A counterfeit that came back from the Colonies and then got lost on a site where it's perfectly logical to have been "naturally found"??

I'm not with the British Museum, but I'd say 98% probability genuine, 2% probability a rare and probably-quite-collectible fake. And I stand by 'stupendous'.

Same goes for its buddy the Hank the Deuce one.

Our Hank the Deuce was the late Henry Ford II. Gives you an idea of the 'antiquity gap' we deal with.

Fantastic find!!!

Those of us in the U.S. often find ourselves drooling over the finds over there :)

Beautiful coin!

Thanks very much for that.
I must admit that I was dissapointed when they said it could well be a 'copy'.
I didn't realise that a 'copy' is even more rare ;)
I just hope more come up next time.
Oh and by the way, can you see the sort of shadow on the Henry one? Where the coin is sort of clean silver then goes black around the edge.
Well if I place the William on top of the Henry and turn it, it exactly matches the shape of that, so is further evidence in my eyes that they have come form a deposit where they are all sitting closely together, on top of each other, like in a pot?
And every time the plough brings up a few.
I am hoping anyway :)

Wow I just love the finds that come from the UK. The hammereds and spindle whorles, buckles, broaches and everything else. That coin is beautiful and I wish you the best that it turns out to be the real thing, if not lets hope it is a period counterfeit which would still be pretty awesome.

Thanks for that.
Well yes it is without doubt a contempory copy if it is one, so will be worth a lot more money.
But I don't really care about what it's worth.
I will say goodnight now, it is nearly 1 o'clock in the morning here!
I just love looking at all your finds, as I have never seen anything like them, they might not be as old as some that we find here, but just as interesting!
And I am gobsmacked at some of pieces of jewellery, I never find anything like that really on our land.
Would love to find a diamond ring!
Night night all :)

I love the stuff you find over there! Keep em coming!

Awesome coins, It must be thrilling to metal detect over there!

A simply incredible and wonderful find! Do you rent rooms? Cause I'm going to need a place to stay when I move to the UK! Just kidding.

Excellent finds, congrats

2 crazyly (my word) RARE coins. Still looking for Henry II & as for the William, not a bat in hells chance.

Hire a hoard/deep detector for the day. Got to be worth a punt.

As you say these are worth a great deal of money but I would be the same as you. "Offer me as much as you like & watch me turn you down everytime"

You must have built & building a truely excellent collection of British history.

Keep posting them, show the group shots of the lesser finds you keep, not just the high lights. I would be interested.
