DAY 1
Things are warming up so I decided to try my luck detecting. I went to a park in a town to the south east where it is warmer hoping the ground would be diggable. The field I wanted to detect was still about 80% frozen, but I did find a few areas that I could dig and I had a decent amount of luck with clad before I got rained out.
I spent 4 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 74 coins with a face value of $5.83, a key, a few pieces of big iron, aluminum tie wire for fencing, aluminum bottle caps, some grommets, foil, can slaw, whole aluminum cans, and 15 tabs.
The only interesting item was a key. It is a post office box key they is labeled U.S.P.S. DO NOT DUPLICATE and an identification number.
DAY 2
I went back to the old scout camp that has only used for special events for the last 15 years. It opened in 1950 and I started detecting here back in 2002 when I first got started and have covered most of the ground. A lot of it was done with my old Fisher 1280X detector. The CZ21 I use now does a much better job of picking goodies out of the junk so I am getting new losses and oldies I missed the first time around.
I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 42 coins with a face value of $1.91, a ruler, 7 wheaties (1941,1944,1945,1945,1946,1951,1955), a bullet, a scout pin, a Canadian penny, 2 leather stamps, scissors, sinkers, a tube top, a modern button, grommets, personal tent pegs (not the big ones that were used when it was a summer camp), aluminum cans, foil, melted aluminum, a 2 foot piece of copper ground wire, 2 pencil ends and 19 tabs.
A decent hunt, but nothing really special. Just stuff that was fun to find as I get my old body back in shape (my arthritis is acting up).
DAY 3
I took another trip to the park nearest my home and spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 78 coins with a face value of $4.95, a ring, a foreign coin, a dog ID tag, a fishing lure, a screw in cleat, 2 sinkers, 2 toy vehicles, a vaping device, whole cans, can slaw, foil, a couple of bottle caps, 16 tabs and a pencil end.
When the ring popped out I only saw part of the edge and it looked like the edge of an aluminum screw on bottle cap. I thought it was junk. Then I got a better look and laughed because I had a silver.
The foreign coin is a Costa Rican 5 colones. The dog ID tag has the dogs name and the owners phone number on the back and the address on the back.
DAY 4
Scout camp up north finally thawed out so I went back to redo another site for new losses and missed items. I spent 6 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 75 coins with a face value of $9.10, 100 camp tent pegs, a copper metal work merit badge project, fishing gear, a neckerchief slide, a Citizenship belt loop, a cross from a religious award, sinkers, a shed antler, a backpack hatchet, 2 springs from old military metal cots , personal tent pegs, foil, melted aluminum and 10 tabs.
I also found a little friend under the leaves. I hope he gets under cover before the snow falls again.
DAY 5
I went back to the middle school. Things are thinning out and there is not a lot of ground I haven’t covered, but you never know when the goodies might pop up. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 60 coins with a face value of $2.38, a wheatie, a game tab, a screw in cleat, a house key, an earpiece, a bent up brass oval, aluminum bottle caps, can slaw, foil, aluminum tie wire for fencing, 43 tabs and 15 pencil ends.
Nothing special, but you never know and I did have some fun and got some good exercise.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
I got lucky this week. I found 3 dimes and 2 pennies on the floor in stores. I got 2 quarters, 2 dimes and 7 pennies in one coinstar and 2 dimes, 2 nickels and 17 pennies in another. But the non detector find of the week as on the sidewalk. My wife and I walk almost every afternoon. We walk on main street because the park paths are still too messy form the snow. These days I rarely find anything, not even a penny, but this time I was in the right place at the right time. As we walked along I spotted a bill on the sidewalk. Not just any bill but a $20 bill. I picked it up and unfolded it and it was two $20 bills. Right place right time scores again.
WHAT I DID WHEN I COULDN’T DETECT
I decided to make some new furniture for our new place. We are moving to be closer to one of our daughters. The move is still a good ways off, but it will take some time to get it all made and the house cleaned out for sale (my dad and I built it and we have lived here 50 years) We are downsizing drastically and a lot of the old furniture won’t fit the new space.
This piece is our new bed. It still needs some finish sanding and coats of polyurethane. I will do that when it warms up so I can do it in the garage. All the wood except a few pieces in the center of the headboard are over 90 years old. The center is actually a small table top I made for my wife several years ago that was not going to make the move.
That’s all for now. I did 5 hunts this week because we are going to get more snow and much colder temperatures again. It was a good way to get going after the long break. Now if I can just get my arthritis under control so the trips aren’t so painful I’ll be good. Thanks for looking, stay safe, good luck, and may your coil lead you to good things.
