The big thing about "7" is that it is SUPPOSED to correct all of the aggravating things in Vista. Since I had to take Vista in my new 'puter about 5 months ago, I'll be upping to "7". It can't be any worse. (famous last words?)

It's a direct upgrade from Vista, but if you are running XP, you'll have to reformat your hard drive and do a clean upload of "7".

"7" does not automatically include apps such as Windows Mail, movie maker, etc. They have to be loaded individually. At least, that's what the information says.

A really big thing for "7" is that it's supposed to be a lot faster than Vista at "wake up". We shall see.

Any opinions on this? Since I have a PC, getting a MAC is out of the question.

I've been using Win7 since sometime around March, or whenever it was that I downloaded RC1. I hated Vista from the get go... but since I've switched to Win7, it's been a dream (in comparison)
The Windows Mail, Movie Maker, and the rest of the programs can be downloaded in a single install file... http://download.live.com/
I've definitely noticed the quicker load & shutdown times, though I always manage to weight it down with my heavy usage. They need to do something better then 4Gig Ram for laptops, 'cause I burn through it after a while. Anyway, my RC1 copy is good through next summer, even though it will start restarting my system every two hours starting in March 2010. I'll have a full copy by then. May well be the only thing I'm willing to pay for... :icon_pirat:

Thanks alot for that link. I've saved it to my Favorites folder and will use it after upping to "7".

In my opinion Vista is the worst OS MS put out since Windows ME. I despise it. I'm still running XP on the 3 pcs I have at home, when I chose to upgrade it want be that much of an issue, I always put the OS on a seperate "C" drive from the rest of my data and programs. Only thing that goes on the OS drive are programs that do not give me an option to put anywhere else but "C" drive.

On my main computer
C Drive is my OS ( 145 gig, 24.9 gig used)
F drive is for gaming, and movies ( 596 gig, 15.1 gig used )
G drive is for data ( 450 gig, 67.4 gig used )

all my drives are mirrored.....................

according to what I've read the upgrade from Vista to 7 is a nightmare. a lot of the programs have to be done manually.
from what I've been told, you would be wise to wait until a full version becomes available and then delete vista and reload 7 or take it to a computer place and have them load a new 7 on your puter

Your best option is to change over to Linux. www.ubuntu.com (You can download it there, it's free)

I am not running Vista on any of my computers, and I have no intention of upgrading to Vista or "7". (My gaming machine is still running XP Pro only because I can't run the games I want on my Linux computer) Most things you want to do can be done on Linux.

Microsoft has made some horrible choices that have (finally) made their users question their practices.

As an example they are pitching that "7" is faster at "wake-up", but in reality that's like determining if you want a new car by looking at how long the valve stems on the tires are.

If you are set on moving to "7" I would give it 6 months to a year before upgrading for them to work out all the bugs that are certain to pop up.

I want switch to any new OS till after the first service pack is released, thats just me.
I'm not going to test new OS for MS for free, new releases are always full of bugs...

When Vista was first released I had many friends calling me with problems becaused they loaded it the day it was released. After helping them for a few weeks I said no way am I switching to Vista, I'm keeping XP. All 3 of my pcs at home are still running XP, my work laptop has Vista and it sucks......

I think there's a misnomer with the Win7 switch. I've been using the Win7 Release Candidate 1 since the beginning of the year, and I've not really had any real problems or bugs with the system. If anything, it's much more stable than Vista... basically making Vista on the same page as the "original release" of XP (which was unbelievably unstable at its release!!!) Win7 seems to clear up many of the issues that Vista had, as well as adding some really neat features that help with productivity, as well as the look of the system itself.

I do have to use a Virt program running XP Pro though, since my work system isn't compatible with Win7 (thanks Cisco!) The cool thing about Win7 is that it does allow have it's own virtualization program that can be downloaded from M$, but you have to have a compatible processor, which mine unfortunately isn't. :dontknow: Thankfully Sun Microsystems has VirtualBox which gets the job done, for free...

Everything I've read so far claims that "7" has corrected the complaints about Vista and is streamlined by not including some of the bundled stuff Vista had. If the release coming out this Thursday is a Beta version; I may holdout because Beta's have a baaaaad rep. You would think that the test releases like Bran has been using would let the MS engineers get their sh-- together, but.............if these engineers are the same crew that brought out Vista, they're still learning. If it's a new crew of fresh faced upstart Eng's then there may be hope yet. :laughing7: My new 'puter has an AMD Quad processor and 8 gigs of RAM and Vista STILL wakes up slooooooooow! So it's definitely the software and not hardware.

I think I'll check out Kim Komando's opinion, too; she's pretty sharp. I usually go to her website when I'm looking for a handy-dandy little freeware app. She checksout EVERY piece of software she recommends on her radio program as well as on her website and tells about all of the warts as well as the "good".

Yeah SS, it's actually the official release that's coming out for Win7. They haven't been in beta since last year... and the RC1 (that comes after beta stage) came out at the beginning of the year. Heck, this Release Candidate has actually impressed me enough to want to purchase it... and if you knew me, you'd know that's saying alot!

WOW. Sounds like MS might have actually done their work "in house" on this one instead of using us as testlab guiniepigs. I might just take the plunge on this one. If it turns out to be a bust I can blame Bran. :laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9: I mean.........I could NEVER take the blame myself. :laughing7:

Ha, ha... I think you'll like it! Even my girlfriend's brother (their whole family are heavily into Mac's) has to use Win7 at his University... and he asked me the other night if it's bad that he likes Windows 7 enough to "actually want a PC?" LOL! This guy is Mac all the way too, so it made me laugh. I, on the other hand, still hate Microsoft. But I've been using their OS's since Windows 3.1, so I know the system inside & out. Yeah, if you don't like it, feel free to blame me. :P
