You need to take a pic of it with a coin or ruler to show size. And what type of medal is it if it is. Need a pic of the other side.

Agree. Half of a "butterfly buckle". Late Victorian.

Maybe bronze,or copper? Found in goldrush town,late1850s. Thought maybe something to do with horses?

Yep,stamped brass sash buckle(Butterfly Buckle)....common to the Victorian Period

I agree with all the others. After seeing the size and the backside, its no doubt half of a butterfly buckle. Its about as solved as its gonna get.
