Re: Winter Stubble Field - Day 8 & Bean Field Day 6.. BIRTHDAY SURPRISE!

I spent about 3 hours in the Bean Field & had a couple of Roman bronzes & a nice buckle.

I was finishing off the last run of the day & had already turned the GPS off thinking I would have nothing more to plot. I was wrong big style! Up from the depths came our best Roman Silver of the year & one of my best ever. Found not only on my own but on my Birthday. What a thrill that was :)

GETA AD198-209 - Silver Denarius
FELICITAS TEMPOR
- My first coin of this Emporer!

Very nice black patina 8)

No shouting, well only in my head ::)

The swan thingy is a 'S' shaped belt buckle. The other end is broken of and would have hooked into the loop of the buckle. Popular for sailors in the 19th century. But they have been used since the 16th century.

I think the "swan thingy" is a snake belt hook (broken).

That's a great birthday present to yourself!! :occasion18: Did it come out of the ground looking like that, or did you clean it up a little?

Only cold water & a soft nail brush, so yes it came out almost (if it weren't black) like the day it was struck! The Archies were very impressed, they never find coins like this with their trowel :)

They call them snake buckles but I have found a few that look more bird like than snake. The snake types tend to have scales as well.

Re: Winter Stubble Field - Day 8 & Bean Field Day 6.. BIRTHDAY SURPRISE!

Nice finds!! The swan looks similar to the part of the snake buckle that buckleboy recovered a short time ago. That coin is in great shape...happy bday

To be honest I was going to go home happy with the buckle as its rare to find them with the throngs. The silver was a last minute shock

When my missus read the name & address on the dog tag, she said it was a friend of her Mums. So after the farmer has seen it, I will do a susprise knock on their door. Can't wait to see their faces when I return it, instead of trying to sale them some kind of cleaning material or windows.
