I need a little better picture but I think what you have is an engineers ruler.

Duggap is correct, you've found the remains of what the civil war relic reference-books say is an Engineer's fold-up wooden ruler. (However, I suspect that it was probably also used in other professions.)

I agree. Although some were Engineer, Architect, and Printers, the majority were Carpenter rules.
The higher priced ones were made of silver and ivory.
The common ones were made of brass and boxwood.
I have a book on these and I also own about a dozen. I can see the pin that guides it together.

Im sure they were made into the 20th century. I didnt realize they were made in the CW era. I have some very old ones and I may get a better price if they are. Thanks.

If you can find the link or picture from the book, CBG, I can compare it with the ones that I have. I have some old ones made in England. They are absolutely beautiful. They just dont make em like that anymore.

BigCypress got it right.

It is a Carpenter's rule. It is going to be impossible to date since the wood is gone. It could be as late as the 1940's.

My Stanley Rule book says the first Stanley Carpenter Rule was made in 1854 so its possible.
