Working a Fort that’s had a lot of action after.

This property goes back to the 1700s by the French and then a fort was built in the early 1800s not having to be used and never seeing much action they made it into a hotel and Casino in the early 1800s then turned into a amusement park in the late 1800’s early 1900’s. What I’m asking is how do I get down deeper with better discrimination and separation between the trash? Is 50 tones the answer or a bulldozer?

P.S. Would the 6” coil help turning it down to a 3 or 4? Just brainstorming

Attack Plan:

What are your primary targets of interest - silver or high conductive coins or mid-conductive brass and lead relics. That will determine your search profile mode starting point (Park 1 for the silver, Park 2 or Field 2 for the mids like lead, brass, and gold).

What is the type and density of the trash? Ferrous, non-ferrous modern, or both?

If there is a lot of trash (regardless of type), then you might want to try to go for the shallow keeper targets that are masked by the trash by turning down sensitivity (sifting). If the trash is primarily modern non-ferrous, then going single frequency (5 or 10 khz) might help (while keeping sensitivity at or slightly below 20) if going for high conductors.

Otherwise, it is hard to just punch down through trash without actually removing it. Using the 6 inch coil helps sift through the trash by minimizing the number of targets under the coil, but the 6" is depth limited by design. By lowering recovery speed (which is what I assume you meant by "turning it down to 3 or 4") you will gain depth but lose separation from the trash which is also counterproductive.

Similarly, cranking sensitivity will just allow the trash to overwhelm the detector.

I would do a normal scan with the stock coil in Park 1 (assuming high conductive targets are of interest) to see what the trash situation is (you will need to dig trash to see what is going on and to get an idea of density), use all metal so you can hear the ferrous. Then I would try to eek out shallow keepers that are there with a lower sensitivity setting in the same mode. Gold mode in multi or single frequency at 20 khz can also help to unmask mid-conductive targets but you will have to keep your eyes glued to the screen to read the TID since there is no Tone ID in gold mode. Also try single frequency in Park 1 at 5 or 10 khz if going for high conductors.

Number of tones is a personal preference - I prefer 50 tones but it can get overwhelming in a high trash situation.

There are no shortcuts. Hopefully, you have an unlimited permission and can work the site gradually to strip down to the older keepers.

I’ve been cleaning pulltabs and iron A LOT I guess I gonna concentrate on the spot I for the Canister ball and clean it out more and see what’s really down there. Release about 300 gophers and let them push up the relics. You'll unfortunately have to start a gopher trapping business to catch them.

I’ve been cleaning pulltabs and iron A LOT I guess I gonna concentrate on the spot I for the Canister ball and clean it out more and see what’s really down there. Good luck. With time as the trash is removed more and more keepers will emerge. Doesn't mean you won't find some deep keepers in the relatively trash free regions of the site. Keep plugging away and you should be rewarded with what sounds like an interesting permission.

Bulldozer! . Short of that, when I need max depth, I run the sensitivity up as high as I can stand it, turn down the recovery speed to 2 (on the 800), run all metal, and most important is to swing the coil slower, and sometimes, a lot slower. I like 5 (or less if your mode will let you adjust it) tones in those trashy sites too. Naturally, the site conditions and desired targets will determine which mode you start with as Vferrari pointed out. As he also mentioned, for shallower targets, use the 6" coil and a sifter program.

It sounds like a great site to go & just get some swing/headphone time in & or Test machines. GL

Sounds like a great site and you have unlimited time to detect. I would use big coil first. Dig everything and go over a large area and see what comes out of the ground. If you find something that is significant I would switch over to the 6” coil and go over the whole area again. This way you know you found a good find and you have already dug every signal good and bad so most trash has already been removed. You should hear less signals which in turn will make it easier to determine if it’s another good find or trash. I know you’ll come out with something good. You always do. Good luck.
