I found this aluminum disc yesterday and I'm pretty sure it's an early soldier's dog tag. The engraved inscription reads "H.S. Latimer/6316415." I know that it's pre-WWII; possibly a WWI tag? Thanks

SSN is from Texas

I think it's a serial number; SSNs are 9 digits

That is a ww1 dog tag. They were very crudely made and had no uniformity to them. I use to have a couple in my collection.

While your tag is a WWI type, it was issued between 1919 - 1940.

According to Wikipedia and other sources -
between 1919 and 1940 the numbers ranged from 6 000 000 to 7 099 999

After 1940, Latimer likely got a new 8 digit service number.

I think this is your guy:

I'm guessing a little but I suspect your guy did basic training at Camp Jackson (later Fort Jackson) in Columbia. In 1940 I find him at the Smoky Hill Army Base in Kansas at the "Bakers & Cooks School".

Herbert Stanley Latimer died 11/23/2007 in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Wow-Thanks Matt! The initials and last name definitely match up but the serial number you listed does not match the number on the tag. Also the tag was found at a home site in South Carolina.

People move, inheritance is given out of state etc. location of find is only the final chapter but there were many chapters before.

After 1940, Latimer likely got a new 8 digit service number.

You didn't read my entire posting... Latimer enlisted in 1939. The army changed to an 8 digit serial number in 1940. He probably got a new number and new tags.

I didn't find any info based on the your tag serial number and didn't find anyone else in the NARA database with the initials 'H. S.' and the last name Latimer. Pretty sure that's your guy.
