Worlds Highest Hill

The city of Poteau OK, claims the Worlds Highest Hill, It is
one foot shy of a mountain, at 1,999 feet high.
Early Explorers, including Thomas Nuttall, (Botanist from England)
and soldiers from early day Ft. Smith Ar, traveled through this area,
they were quided by Cherokee Indians. (Ft. Smith est 1811).
They reported seeing large stones, shining in the sun, on the hill,
as they were riding west across the meadows toward it.
The Indians said they were ancient signal fire areas.


Pic's are Cavanal Hill, Stone marker, view from the top.
Vandals have chipped on the stone, & painted it, workers
have to clean it often.

Treasure has been found,(Gold Bullion), & there are
several caves on the hill, one had a pine tree inside, no one
could figure how it got there, (it was too long to make the
bends in the cave).

Hi Fossis,

Interesting about the tree in the cave.

What seems like about a hundred years ago, we lived in the Kiamichi mountains south of there. Our nearest neighbor was about 12 miles away, and the nearest town was Talahina, locals pronounced it Talahaney. I was only 5 years old when we moved away from there, but I still have some good memories of that place.

Wonder why they didn't make a small rock pile at he top and call it a mountain?

General Regulations

Possession of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the Refuge, including the camping and picnicking areas.


Public Access, use, or recreational activities not specifically permitted are prohibited. Compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations including all official signs is required.

Permitted recreational activities, points of interest, and facilities are marked by symbols along roadsides or in recreation areas located in the Public Use Area of the Refuge.


Fires are permitted only in those areas where camping and picnicking are permitted. They must be built in grates and grills provided for that purpose. Dead fallen timber may be used. Fires must not be left unattended and must be completely extinguished before leaving the area. During periods of very high fire danger (as noted by signs at Refuge entrances), wood fires are prohibited. The use of campstoves and charcoal in grates and grills is permitted during high fire danger periods.


Swimming, wading, and snorkeling are prohibited on the Refuge.


Hiking, sightseeing, nature observation and photography are permitted during daylight hours only. Night fishing in designated lakes and through traffic are permitted after dark.


Searching for treasure or artifacts and gold panning are prohibited on the Refuge.


General camping is permitted only in Doris Campground. Youth camping is available at Fawn Creek Campground by reservation. Backcountry camping is available by permit in the Charon's Garden Wilderness Area."

Now there is a difference between the Wichita Mountains and the Ouachita National Forest and the Kiamichi mountains. For one, they are across the state from each other. One's in the Southwest and the other is in the Southeast.

I was responding to superduty's post. You can pan on the Kiamichi River for one.

Yeah Wes, the late Gloria Farley was taken to the
cave by some locals years ago.
I have not seen it yet, maybe this winter.
I found petrified wood, ferns, & small 'Golden'
Ammonites at a coal mine at the south base of the hill,
They were Pyrite, but crumbled away.
I have seen 'Herkimer diamonds' that came from the
hill, & several larger crystals.
I, along with Gloria, people from Texas, & a man &
his son (from Spain), went looking for a carved stone
a few years ago on the hill, didn't find the stone, but
I found a partial arrowhead, & a piece of petrified
wood, he was going to publish pic's in a magazine in
Spain when he returned home.
A small 'Runestone' was found by some schoolboys
several years ago.

Great idea Stoney, I also know of one on the West
side, if I can get permission to explore.
I had a story to research near there, about Spaniards
being thrown down into a deep cave by Indians.
But when you have to rely on other people to help, it
oftentimes goes wrong, I told the man we needed to act
fast, as the gentleman who knew the place was getting old,
Sure enough he passed away soon after that.
Another lost Treasure.
