So I went out detecting a couple weeks ago at a local spot and guess what I found? POISON IVY! WOOOHOOOO!!! But not the poison ivy I got when I was a kid that just goes away when you stop scratching it... This poison ivy is some newer more evil strain of poison ivy...

The first day it was just on my hand so I'm like.. "whatever i'll put a glove on when i sleep and i won't scratch it and it will be gone in a few days and i'll be on my merry way.."

When I woke up the second day my eye was swollen shut and it was all over..

After about 3 days I could see again but it took about 2 weeks for the ivy to go away

It was all just about gone and I thought I was home free.. That night within about an hour I go from in the clear to completely covered in hives...

I went to sleep and when I woke up the next morning(today) they were pretty much all gone... ???

So like 2 hours ago out of nowhere I'm fully covered in hives again even worse... :'(

After doing some reading online apparently this happens to a lot of people from poison ivy and the hives can come and go for MONTHS!!!

If anyone has experienced hives after the poison ivy let me know if you know of some miracle cure pls :)

i've included some pics of the blood money.. lol

I'm in Korea, and so use some over-the-counter stuff of Korean origin. But, my tolerance is pretty high.
Had a couple of friends, and my son, get into the same stuff that takes me a day or so to get rid of.......they had to go
to the hospital. And it was serious.
Go to the dr. I have never heard of anything from poisen ivy recurring......but, I haven't heard about everything.
Hope you get better. God bless. Merrry Christmas.

I'm suddenly feeling better about some of my minor health problems. What you experienced was a real nightmare.

lol blood money ...now thats funny...I know what yah mean to go home & start pulling tics out!

got a bad case myself last month. Go to the doc. They give you a shot in he rear and it starts clearing up right away.

Go to the doc, my sis had it like you are describing, horrible hives! Even with medication it took weeks to go away, so don't wait any longer. And they told her she would be more suseptable now, so she doesn't even go near it. Hope you feel better soon!

did you ride in the car with your poison ivy clothes on and not clean the seat ?

Been there done that!

I had a BAD case of poison ivy back in the day. I mean to tell you...I was TORN UP with it! My left arm swelled up to the point that it split open and got into my blood stream I guess. I know that I went for 3 days without sleep! (I watched the entire Gulf War on CNN) I went to the Dr and got a shot and they put me on some steroids for a few days. Right about the time I started getting over it, I started breaking out with hives. I only broke out a couple times, and I assumed it was a bad reaction to the steroids. Not much you can do for it. I was just eating Benedryl like M&M's! :tongue3: It stopped after a couple days. I was absolutely miserable!

Hope you get some relief soon!

Out here on the west coast we don't have poison ivy, but we do have poison oak. When I was a kid I got it really bad, which acted like an immunization shot, and I can wade in the stuff now. My ex-wife couldn't pet the horses, wash my work clothes, or pet the dogs if they had been out in the brush without getting it. I've never heard of getting hives after poison oak, and I do know that there are shots available for people that need them, and they seem to work. If you burn poison oak, you can get it from the smoke, and that's the worst way to get it. Does poison ivy work that way also? I wonder if I don't get poison oak, would I get poison ivy? Don't send me any to find out, I'm just wondering.

at least you made some nice finds

I don't know the differences between the oak and the ivy, but I know that burning the ivy poses the same danger. I used to get poison ivy every time I hunted a certain site (Iceberg), but just in patches on my arms, yet still quite irritating. Then I tried wrapping up my entire forearms and wrists with cellophane and duct tape. I've done this for the half a dozen trips I've made back there since trying this, and I haven't gotten a speck of it since.
Wishing you all the best on the recovery.

Hi Mike, it may sound like a strange question but have you been eating at any fast food burger joints? I had a similar experience this spring but it didn't involve poison ivy. A friend came for a visit, we went digging and afterwards stopped at McDonald's for burgers. Later that night my feet started to itch like crazy, then it started to move up my legs. I couldn't stop scratching and thought I got into a mess of chiggers and the next morning I woke up covered in hives. Took some benydryl and it all went away in a couple hours. A couple weeks later I ate another hamburger at Wendy's and the same thing happened but not as bad. A few weeks after that I was beginning to suspect fast food beef so I risked a Five Guys burger and sure enough that night the itchy feet and legs and later hives. I've since sworn off all take out burgers but have eaten fish sandwiches and fries from McD's and store bought ground beef, steak, beef ribs etc. with no problems. Just wanted to throw this out there as a possibility, I might be wrong about what was causing my itches and hives but I'm not taking anymore chances :)

Hello BosnMate, from a former AT2,

I believe immunity to poison oak is also immunity to poison ivy. When I was about 12, I climbed a tree to
pick wild grapes. Later, I found there were poison ivy vines mixed in with the grape vines. I was covered
from the top of my head, to the bottom of my feet with itches. :laughing7:
After it was finally over, I found I was immune to poison ivy. Then, years later, when I migrated from FL
to CA, I found (like you) I could plow through a patch of poison oak with no effect at all. I've also broke
the branches with bare hands, so others could follow me safely. All I get from that is Black Palms. Darn sap is really hard to wash off. :headbang: :laughing7:

Eagle

I am not allergic to it at all. But when I have men come to work on my property, which is covered with it, I have them apply the cheapest greasiest hand lotion to all exposed areas of their bodies. I want them to put in on thick. The poison ivy has an oil in it and it is the oil that causes the problem. if you are covered with the cheap greasy lotion then the Poison Ivy oil never makes it to the skin. But like was stated. It can get on your clothes, your shoes and even your equipment, and then if you touch that, it will get you. just be extra careful it is worth the effort.

Poison Ivy n poison oak are the same oil......u r having a reaction to it...kinda like n allergy......take benidril if u can...it is a histimin blocker....it will help n stop the itch.....the oil that u r reacting to forms small blisters of water on the skin surface....causes itch....u cannot spread it by scratching..but can get infected....make sure u clean with a good detergent all items that came in contact ....the oils can cause a reaction up to a couple years later if u touch again. I am telling u this from experience. Everytime I get poison oak I do exactly as I posted. The benidril will shorten the recovery time in half, at least in my experience. The first time I got poison oak I researched it to find this out......Poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac are all the same pioson oil an react differntly depending on ur immune system. You can build a tolerence, but to do it u must contract the said rash a few times to do it. Good Luck

The fact that the sap from those evil plants is a sticky oil is the key. I'd use Grease Relief or a really strong solvent (Turpentine or odorless paint thinner) to cut the oil once I knew I'd been exposed, and washed the clothes the same way. Once I started doing that, it kept it from coming back, as long as you eliminate the oil once it gets on you.

I know what you mean. I live in French Gulch, Northern California and my kids track it from their shoes. So watch out for that as a precaution! Plus wash your clothes in bleach type detergent and seperate your stuff so the resins do not get on others clothes in the family... especially the under wear.
I have had a nasty bout with some kind of baby spiders or ticks. My baseball hat was knocked off by a branch and I hit the hat hard but later I had a itch in the back area of my scalp. and I have had itching and about 5 or 6 pimple type hard bumps under the skin and they are still there after 3 or so months. I might have to have a doctor look at it. Any berry thorn ankle scrapes and pioson ivy, I rub some betadine topical iodine onthe areas as well as itches.(If they use it on the battle field & Hospitals as well as amputees, it has to be good stuff. you can pick it up at any drug store, it is a microbicide that kills many bacterias! Hope this helps.
Good luck friend.

Hives are usually just uncomfortable (extremely), but if you have any trouble breathing make sure to hit the ER!

Steroid shot and some prednisone med pack is about the only thing that gets me rid of it... :angry5: I hate it, makes me not want to relic hunt at all....
