Would 19th or early 20th century German/Irish immigrants to the USA use feet or meters to mark their cache?

IF someone dug a hole and put a flat tin can or rock or whatever firm object that last ,longer than a pine board a few inches deep from the surface , above the cache then a probe would confirm the X/very spot to dig.
I used a pine board once. Mistake.
( My yard probe is an electrical ground rod. )
I used a board because that particular morning burying a deer skull for a Euro mount later I hit to large of roots to cut and hit too frozen ground. So multiple spots had been disturbed. I wanted the board to be a tell/confirmation when thumped with a probe. And to guard the bone of the skull.
Worse, I told the kid to set a nickle I provided on the right spot too.
I found the nickle months later when ready to dig it up. Nothing in the hole below it!
I even found a long prior spot I had buried a small about of debris.
Probed the heck out of the area. Never did find that skull.

i haven't lost anything buried under a corner. Yet. Harder to be detected too if it's metal.
I don't think the person put a tin can or any small metal sheet above the cache because our colleagues would have detected it. Like I said, 2 attempts I can see were made at digging. 1 of them 9 feet too far. The other even farther away BUT on the other side of the markers.
In my understanding with Pendulum, the reason I am getting the signal from 6 meters away ( perhaps even more )
And
THE Signal still abides to the suppressed type of signal,
Because I ignore those typical of the natural forest signals that are almost always above 65 and even above 70 mm for that area ( × 4 you multiple bit that is not set in stone)
And it is right there!
But the reason only this spot Is So much SPECIFICALLY suppressed when measuring With my other method ( lets just call it With Closed eyes ),
Is because The surrounding 4 or 5 meterss or more RADIUS. THEREFORE Can Not Be cluttered with stones or objects that used to be the foundation of a barn or animal Cell....
My assumption is ONLY the 1 meter RADIUS or less right at the spot IS probably cluttered..

I can't dig, I have a health issue right now. I can't even stayed exposed to the sun too much.

If a serious person wants this spot, But he has to take full responsibility. Etc... It's his Spot after I show it to them, they have to come to Chicagoland.
I will just ask for 10 % or whatever..... it will Be Their Spot!
And I want to be told later on if Yes and how much and how much of what was there.... so I can Calibrate my method further.
But he has to be a person "With BIG WINGS who Knows how to fly ..."..and Nothing escapes their Eagle eyes attention....:))) under the Sun..

CORRECTION: I found the Family name to whom the parcel belonged as early as 1870 in that exact place!
I will try to locate them in the next months

I wrote in detail the info I found out to MiddenMonster
You can All see what I wrote there

Why would they necessarily use either? If you're burying a cache with the intent to return, wouldn't it be just as easy to mark it off by number of steps? You identify a constant, like a tree or large rock. Then you take 10 steps to the North using your measuring gait, bury the cache and you're done. If you use any standard measuring device, you have to have it with you when you want to retrieve (and bury!) the cache. Nice luxury, if you have it. But you might glad to just have a shovel when the gettin' time rolls around.

There are no large rocks around, not within 30 yards . I didn't look in all directions though.
I think any appeoachb out of say 5 main approaches could have been used by the person...
' there used to be a Contemporary farm there with about 40 acres of land.
But I don't know if the Spot falls within those boundaries
- achanceforgold member sent me that 1898 map with the Estates and I saw about 2 Miles away were many smaller Estates some of them with only a few acres
But it's a legal map. Doesn't say if those owners were engaged in farming or what
' My idea is this piece of land was auxiliary and maybe of their Old person like a grandfather. Maybe he didn't tell his kids or grandkids nothing .

I just see the measurements distance I so precise like 8 meters plus minus 20 cm that it
1) either can't be that deep
2) is very Contemporary like from the 1940s and onwards
3) is Rare conglomeration of Emanating factors AND therefore all the Markings Were done after 1960s by our colleagues WHO just wanted to mark an exceptionally CONVINCING spot.... and NEVER returned to dig....
But then Why would they go through the effort of inserting 3 almost totally Vertical albeit just like 8 - 10 lbs each??
Stones that look like a serpentine in a circle. I Couldn't find in Online Astrology images this particular arrangement of 3 pointed towards the sky In equal distance KIND of edgy stones .
So I don't know what a Srrpentine image is

But there is a blanket of stones right next to the 3 stones that half of them are not budging or almost not budging when I kick them. They are like 5- 15 lbs each one too....not big.

OK. Without landmarks or reference points around, on what would you base any measurements, feet or meters? Whether you use feet, meters or footsteps, you have to measure from point A to point B. I'm just saying that if you know point A, someone walking off a distance back then is just as likely as someone measuring off a distance. And if you don't know point A, you're just digging in the wind, as the hep kids say...

do you have a sample of what the target object may be there?

If gold or silver, do you have a few sample coins from that period?
if physical dollars, do you have some old dollars from the period?

The reason I ask, is you can train a dog to scent detect that specific smell.

It doesn't take that long., you'll have fun, and you may be able to better pinpoint the target.

Oh I know point A as I described it in detail towards the end of my reply.
Yes. He could have measured by walking of course as there might have been a marker or nearby structure back then! .For sure there must have been something built nearby. Maybe he reemoved It later when other neighboring parcels started being settled??
I did find the Estate, I am gonna post somewhere online saying I am looking for the descendants of that family name.
Because I don't have an account with family tree or Illinois Library or Birth certificates or what not.
But I know now for sure the name of the person or It was his father or son.....
And I saw for sure in a preliminary overview section of 1 of those Genealogy search sites, that Estate was right there as early as 1870.
See what happens, I will report within a month or 2. Maybe a grandson who is old now or a woman will respond.

Only 2 families in Chicagoland with that Family name
Back Who ALSO had land there, and maybe also a parcel somewhere nearby too....
But only 1 of those 2 family names had land in that County!

And their family name is 90 % guarantee German.

See what happens....

My dog died 6 months ago and I am not planning to get another dog because I don't want to get attached emotionally.
I have a vague idea of what the container may be.
I think the container matters more thsn the contents because since they didn't detect it, it is thicl or bulky or both.
I published up to the MiddenMonster that I found the Estate and the Family name. The Estate was right there under that same family name as early as 1870.
But I need to publish now online searching fir the descendants.
Only 1 family in Chicagoland with that family name had Property as large in that area. Or any such land in the Far suburbs.
Another family had Property but in a totally different county!
See what happens

I don't have account with the Archives. State library records for Birth and death certificates and so on.

But the guy had at least 2 wives at different times. Maybe even 3. And he was German.

I'm sorry for your loss.
I know it is difficult being emotionally attached.

“A Dog’s Last Will and Testament,”
Before humans die, they write their Last Will & Testament, and give their home and all they have to those they leave behind.

If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask…

To a poor and lonely stray I’d give:
My happy home,
My bowl,
My cozy bed,
My soft pillows and all my toys,
The lap which I loved so much,
The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name.
I’d will to the sad, scared shelter dog the place I had in my human’s heart, of which there seemed no bounds.

So when I die please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand.” Instead, go find an unloved dog; one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to him. This is the only thing I can give … the love I left behind.

Thank you

Yeah it's a different perspective to get another dog!
I might in a year or so!
