I hope I put this in the correct place as im new to this forum. I live in Hamilton New Zealand and I have been digging up aircraft parts from our back end property since I was 6 years old (now 18 going on 19). The aircraft were: Kittyhawks, Corsairs, Venturas, Hudsons, Harvards and I believe Avengers too. They were used by the RNZAF in the pacific, and after the war they were melted down or destoryed. I also try to clean them up so people can identify them better. I was also in paper for the finds recently: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/2828633/Unearthing-pieces-of-NZs-WWII-history . here is a few parts I have found over the years.

Sweet finds. Great pieces of history :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: .

I have more that I dug up a while back. One bit I found was a U.S.N Kinfe. I wonder if it came out of one of the planes? Heard there was a Catalina around there also, but never seen any in the pictures. It has numbers ingraved on it. 4011. Stay tuned, there is more photos! I will be going the aircraft dump right after this post. So who knows I might find something good! :icon_thumleft:

Very nice. I have a 1943 Boeing Stearman I have restored and fly. I would like to see a few pictures of the area/terrain where your digs are. Dig they bulldoze everything into a pit and burn it?
Thanks

TiredIron

Hi there. well they had workshops up the top and took the aluminium off most of the planes and melted it down, im guessing most of the parts were burned. lots of melted bits down there, but then again there are some parts with paint still on them so its hard to say. Here I got some photos before it had sand dumped on it. I still find parts, its just harder to reach them. Nice part you were talking about! :icon_thumleft:

Oh by the way I didnt dump the sand on the site. The people next door dumped it on it. It wasnt nice when I found out about it.

Welcome to T-Net. You have some nice little finds there :headbang:

I read about this on Trikiwi's post. There was a newspaper article about it I think.
Very interesting, welcome to TN.

Hi there! Thanks for the welcome. Yep that would be true about it being in the newspaper! Got alot of info from people ringing me up that worked near it or on that area, even got in contact with a person that would of worked on some of the parts im digging up!

Good news everyone! I might of found a full engine or just a engine block. Hang on a few months while I dig it out (Its buried deep), Pictures soon. Also will get pic's of other parts I found a few days back and said I would put photos on. Cheers! :icon_thumleft:

as a loooonnnng time warbird aficionado , I have read your posts with interest! Thanks for posting the pics, is the engine you found round (radial), or inline?

See for yourself! I cant dig it all out yet as the sand would crush me if it fell, but then again its a nice part! ;D. Will have to work around it and remove alot of sand. Hope these pic's of it make it identifyble to people. Just got back today after taking photos. the last photo you see is all the other parts I found in the hole I dug (And still counting).

I dont think its all there :( but hay its still a great piece of history and a nice find! All I need now is a plane ;D.

Cheers!

Great stuff you've been digging, is that a 30 or 50 caliber shell casing converted to a bottle opener?
Carl

I believe the shell casing was made into a whistle!!! not a bottle opener.

Love the whistle, welcome to TNet, you have some really interesting finds there. You have sparked an interest with me. ~happy hunting~

Hi there! Its a bottle opener as a concil member also has one and used to play around the aircraft before they got destoryed.

Hi Tony :icon_thumleft: Great to see your post here and a big 'Kiwi Welcome' to TreasureNet :hello2:

Cheers, Mike
