thanks to the help from the "what is it " forum, was able to ID this button as a WWI great seal button by the "American button co of newark"

Yes,they still use the great seal as the emblem on the face of military buttons.The designs of the backs and the wordings have changed through the years thus making it easy to identify the time period a given button was made. This one says American Button Co. on the back. This was only used from 1901-1920. Another variation is the 1902-1917 button that says Am. Button Co.
