Detector(s) used
E-trac, Explorer II, Xterra30, Whites Prizm IV
Never used the explorer. I decided to go with the x70. It really has all the adjustments I would ever want to adjust. I hear the explorer is a wonderful machine but for me, I didn't think it was worth $600 more than the x70. The only area I found somewhat lacking, is in nwet salty sand. I also own a sovereign and the x70 just plain doesn't run as stable on the wet sand. It is good in the wet but it's no sovereign. If it turns out yoou don't like the x70, they hold their value so you wouldn't loose much getting rid of it.

Enjoy

Also, some excellent good deals on used xterra70's too... I say give it a go..

Hey Bootybay.............

The X-70 is a great detector, but it does have advantages over the Explorer in not just price but weight. Still you have to decide what you want in a detector just like ya have to decide what you want in a car. Both the Caddy CTS and Honda will get you there, but one is more enjoyable to drive or even have parked in the driveway.

Some just can't adjust to the Explorer and these are the same type people that still have the clock blinking on the old VCR. LOL there is a learning curve to each machine, but is is supposed to be fun learning them.

I've learned the EX II pretty well. I'm still not digging really deep old silver but I think that may just be the spots we have been hunting.

I know the 70 is light and I just wondered, comapred to the EX line if it was any better or worse.

Hey there Mastereagle,I have an x-70 and have had good results with it BUT I've had issues as well.I had to send it back due to a problem (loose conection ? ) in the control box.The shaft is just a hair to long on the shortest setting,I'm 5' 7" and if I was to set it any longer I'd have to be 10 foot tall to use the darn thing.Them Aussie's must be bloomin huge ! :D I allso havent seen were the depth meter is very acurate. My problem with the control box was fixed with no problems whatsoever though.Minelab sent me a new box and all I needed to send in the old one so I wasent stuck without a detector while it was in the shop.So the customer service I think is awesome. I think if minelab were to make a larger coil for the 70 it would go just as deep as the SE.With the standard coil on all metal I've dug 1/2 reales at over 10 inches and the other day I dug two square nails that were almost 2 foot deep.

masteregale22, I have the se and just bought the xt-70 used and think I will like it, took her on a test drive today and did well. I just bought the pro coil too you could do the same with the explorer II and pick up the 70 also. I think you could have a killer combo! Just my 2c.

Larry,

The Only Drawback to the 70 ~ NO SUNRAY PROBE ~ If you every use a SUNRAY you will know ...

The Sunray Probe is to metal detecting what John Holmes was to Porn ...

My 2 Cents ~ Buy a unit that handles a Sunray ...

I'm still learning my X-70, but I have heard a couple of users say that with the way the XTerra pinpoints, an electronic probe is just another tool without a purpose.

Ok so I am really ready to replace my EX II with either a SE Pro or an X-70. I have been told the X-70 is actually a really good machine and the price is definitely attractive.

So should I buy a 70 or a SE Pro? Why do you make the suggestion you do???

No reason to upgrade to an SE Pro. Just buy the new 11" Pro Coil for $200 and bam, you have a new detector. Then you can also buy the x70 as well and still have only spent $900. Much cheaper than spending $1200 on a new machine and having to sell the old one. This way you can have the best of both worlds.

I have been thinking the same exact thing about the PRO coil. That is the way to go I guess. So I have almost enough saved to get one of those. Think I'll give it a try.

Thanks all.

I just purchase a Xt 70 Have run it for a few days with the stock coil In the disc and the all-metal.. Next few with the 5x10 DD.. Had a XS and a SE and do like the speed of the Xt much better..

Can I quote you the day you maul that key date coin or righteous artifact ...

Well, unless the coin is almost on the surface, don't you need to dig a hole before you can use that probe?

All i know is i use a pinpointer with my X-Terra 70................

All I know is that I would NEVER EVER hunt without a pinpointer. I have read posts by some people on here why pinpointers are a total waste of time, money and that people with skill don't need em.

Well I am not too proud to use the BEST tool available when I am out detecting. A pinpointer is just that a tool to be used to SUPPLEMENT good detecting skills. I have gotten really good with me EX II but occasionally I will get off center with my plug and the pinpointer keeps me from making a big mess and an even bigger hole.

Just my 2-cents worth.

And I like the way the 70 Pinpoint mode works but nothing is 100%.

I am just curious to hear from people that have both machines. I want to hear pros and cons of both so I can make up my mind.

The main reason I am thinking about a new machine is for a very shallow and silly reason. I want a Brand New out of the box machine. Not a used one like both the ones I have now but a brand new one. Will the new one work any better? NO but that doesn't stop me from wanting one!

I get wanting a new one. All my detectors are new, and previously when I bought a used one in "new condition", it wasn't. I take great care of my machines, clean them each time I use them. But with all that, they don't look what I'd consider new. One use and they're not.

Yeah I know so I am just going to get the Pro coil and look for a good deal on an X-70...

check out this video, kinda interesting it is comparing the two detectors
http://www.mlotv.com/view/353/minelab-se-vs-minelab-x-terra-70/
the x-70 wins hands down

That is comical.

Now put the coins 8" in the ground, and swing the detector like it should be swung and not like you are out golfing.

The results will be much different then.

But if you want to hunt surface clad then the explorer is not for you.

And when hunting fields where there is iron everywhere you would be running all metal and ferrous tones anyways.

Hey bscofield6 I don't think anyone is personally attacking the SE or the II or XS. I saw the video too and had to wonder why the EX did so poorly when the 70 did so well.

Maybe because the 70 is like the XLT and it only sends the signal down about 3 inches!!!!!!  :D :D :D :D (no whites user was harmed in the posting of that joke) :o
