I am looking at buying an X70. For those that have or had an X70 what do or did not care for as far as performance of the machine? I have read plenty of good stuff but, we as md'ers dont like to talk about the negative of our hobby, and I think we should give both sides of a story when talking about the equipment we use. So my questions are using the stock coil...
1. How often does it fail to notch items that you have notched?
2. Have you had problems with the inaccuraccy of depth?
3. With all TID machines the screen lies. lol. How often has your screen lied to you?
4. In trashy areas, does it really give you the info to discriminate good from bad? How often did you dig a bad target after the machine IDed the target as being a "keeper"?
5. Have you ever dug gold jewelry, and if so what was the machine telling you?
6. Just how hard is it to set up and go? How long did it take you to feel "comfortable" with using the machine?
7. Have you ever had to send yours in for repair, and was it repaired to your liking?
8. How many have bought then sold the machine because it didnt fit your hunting style?
9. Is the pinpoint feature a truly no motion pin point (like the ace250 for instance)?
10. What one thing did dissapoint you with the machine that you had to "get over" to enjoy hunting with it?

Any reponses would be appreciated so that I can make a better decision regarding this machine. TMAN...

I've been hunting since 1984 and I can't find a deficiency with the 70. I had a 50 for coin and jewelry and it was tops. But I traded for a 70 because I plan to prospect in Colorado and beach hunt in Florida this year. With the 70 you cover all bases except underwater hunting.

Thank you khouse for the response. I have read some comments regarding the stock 9" coil's performance. The comments are basically that it is less than par, i.e. loss of depth poor target Id etc. Have you had this problem? I dont neccassarily want to buy a detector and then spend additional money to make it work. TMAN...

tman,
The stock coil goes deep. Yesterday I dug a 12 gauge shell case at 10 inches. I also have the 6 inch HF DD coil that is fantastic. I have a 10.5 HF DD coil coming too. The stock and small coil ID's targets fine. Don't hesitate to purchase a 50 or 70. Plus being a full pound less that the other detector makes it a joy to swing.

I own the X70

1 Never
2 Yes but I always dig a 6" plug anyway (personal style)
3 On repeatable signals, seldom to never
4 Yes with the 6" coil
5 10k gold heart TID 12 every way I scanned
6 very easy
7 Never
8 N/A I still own it
9 I always sweep to pinpiont. But it does seem so. In pinpint, you can stop and slowly find the target
10 I wish it came stock with the DD coil. I hate concentric.

I agree, I haven't had a problem with the stock coil. I do have 3 khz coil and it likes the small stuff. I have owned several detectors, this is one of my favorites..

I have own the Minelab X-Terra 50 for a month and really love it. This machine really work so good ever I use than other kind of metal detector. At my home, ten acres, I got a nice one dollar morgan coin, year of 1890 and a dime, year of 1876. Both coins were under about four inches deep. Other metal detectors don't pick up the sound at same spot where X-Terra 50 found it. The X-Terra 70 is very good machines, but I can't afford it, so down to medium budget what I got X-Terra 50.

What do I not like? Be honest with me, there is no comment!

Richard

Windrun,
If I wasn't planing a trip to Colorado for prospecting and Florida for salt beach hunting the 50 is all I would have needed. So I traded my 50 for a 70. But the 50 is still tops in my book!

My only grip is MINELAB will not sell Ralph @ Sunray the dang chips
to make a Sunray Probe for Pinpointing
Get a vibraprob or a detectorpro pointer....Myself i don't like all the extra cable to mess with and then can only use it with one detector........As for the X-terra 70 tops in my book.....==Jim==

I have been using the X-70 for a few weeks , Actually the past week for it has taken me a week or 2 to find a good site . I have dug a couple of colonial coppers , and a large cent at about 4 - 8 inches using the standard coil , will be buying a DD , today for it is going to be much easier getting into forest over growth .

A-frekin-men.... :icon_scratch:

I've only had the X70 for a couple weeks but I like it a lot, finding lots of coins and a couple rings (mostly in areas that have been detected heavily). To date, I've just used it in the auto mode for coins, and haven't tried prospecting yet. One thing I've noticed is that (so far) I can't pinpoint with it as well as I could with my old White's Coinmaster IV. With that one, I could stick a probe into the ground and touch the coin, usually on the first try, then get under it, and pop it out, barely disturbing the soil. I've found some really deep coins with the X70 though, beyond the reach of a probe even, and I've dug some pretty deep holes. I'm sure by the end of summer, I'll have the pinpointing down on it.

tman...The X-Terra-70 with the 10.5 DD 7.5KHz coil is one hell of a machine. If it tells you there is something there....then you had better dig ::) ::) ::). Lol it is a great dectector. TomB

Ok, the headphone "door" is cheesy and unnecessary. The volume range does not go quite high enough. The 10.5 coils are heavier than necessary, throwing off a well balanced detector. Minelab could have used a slimline type coil. The buttons are sometimes hard to depress. And the shaft cam locks don't always hold and sometimes need to be replaced, which Minelab does for free. Other than that, the 70 is pretty much a perfect detector. I think when all the votes are counted, it will far surpass the popularity of the Fisher F75. And of course it costs $300 less.

I agree but as long as I keep digging up the colonial coins , and artifacts of the period in hunted out spots I will deal with the extra weight which isn't much ... when I detect I swing with the DD for about 4 to 6 hours ,If you are in good physical condition its no problem, what I dug up in the past week and a half has nearly paid for the detector and extras , up grading from the Ace 250 to the Xterra ha been the best choice of my Life .. bar none .
