Probably cinders left over from a coal burning stove. Often called a type of "hot rock", types of stones that will set off a detector. I have hunted places here in the northeast where people would spread their burned coal ashes and cinders in icy walkways for better traction, making the walkways almost impossible to hunt due to all the signals from cinders. The carbon in them is conductive which causes the detector to sound off.
