Yeah it's Fall

Went down to Independence Pass today lookin at fall foliage. No trees to look a up on the pass at 12,000ft., but I always get a kick out of seein the old timers and flatlanders huffing and puffing on the trail, complaining about the altitude and thin air, haha! But thank goodness no one hit the ground, which I have seen happen on some of these passes. Met an 18 wheeler on the road who was a victim of his GPS. He was getting a police escort to get him safely over. They're not supposed to use it, but if they accidentally start up it, not much of a place to turn around when they figure it.

That is such gorgeous country..

Met an 18 wheeler on the road who was a victim of his GPS. He was getting a police escort to get him safely over. They're not supposed to use it, but if they accidentally start up it, not much of a place to turn around when they figure it.

He's not a victim of his GPS, he's a victim of his own ignorance. Ya don't go taking a big truck up and over the Rockies on some barely paved two-track without either consulting an actual map and/or making a phone call to insure it's passable.

No matter which end of the road you enter from, there's a big-assed sign there telling drivers of the 35ft. max vehicle length. Hopefully he got an expensive ticket to go with his adventure..teach him not to do that again.

Well DizzyDigger, I deal with drivers everyday. Some are professionals, but it appears you can get a job driving a truck tomorrow. The new ones follow that GPS religiously. I've had them wind up stuck in residential Breckenridge for 4 or 5 hours, gone over some back road near Georgetown cause 70 was shut down and GPS suggested an 'alternate route', which got them stuck on a mountain pass for a day. I don't know if they can understand the signs much less read a map. Here at work, all together we can speak about 5 different languages in addition to English (got one that can speak Chinese now too) but not a one of us can talk to somebody from Ethiopia who thinks they speak English real good. The quality of drivers they're hiring, I'd really pay attention next time an 18 wheeler gets behind you on the road. (One thing we do know, it is pronounced 'A-chee-opia)

Spent a few years pulling a flatbed for an outfit out of Sheridan, Wy.; mostly hauling dimension lumber out of the mills in the Rockies, none of which were particularly easy to access, especially in the winter months. It's definitely no place for rookies who don't habla.

By "back road" are you talking about that goat trail from Georgetown over Guanella Pass to Grant? Good weather I might try it in a log truck, with the pup stacked on the bunks, but 80' of tractor trailer? Hell no.

Things have changed a great deal since then. Back then, common sense was a job requirement..apparently that's no longer the case.

Exactly, xr7ator. You know about some of the accidents we've been having with big trucks up here lately. DizzyDigger, you're probably right on that route. I know dispatch couldn't find him, and they called out law enforcement who finally located him. I will say we have a couple of drivers who only speak Spanish (they probably know more English than they let on) I can talk to them, and these guys really know their stuff. I don't have to tell drivers much, but I'd prefer they quit sending me drivers that 'speak the English real good' but don't understand a word of it, haha!
