Yesterday's box

No silver >:(. Did find a 2003 and our first 1987D. The reason it's the first 87 is we usually just search the rims for silver, NIFC's or proofs. This was very shiny so the date was checked. Just happened to be a very shiny 87. We had found a 87S before but not a D. The search goes on.................

Are NIFC identifiable via side-scanning? If so, how?

They tend to have bright, shiny, brand new looking edges as the Mint has not introduce any new coins for circulation since 2001 (actually, I have no idea when they ran out and stopped shipping, but 2001 is the last year they minted any new coins for circulation). Logic being that circulated coins get darker, not brighter, means that bright, shiny edges are a new coin either from sitting in a vault for many years, or from someone spending coins from a collection/gift.

The vast majority of bright shiny coins will be 97P, 98D, and a few other yea/MM from the nineties, but many will be 2002 or newer.

Exactly. This 87 was so shiny it could have been NIFC or even a proof. Nice coin for 87

Not could have been NIFC; it was NIFC!
