Yesterday's Hunt yeilds two nice 1700's Coppers and silver!
I recently secured permission for a new site that I have been looking to get for over a year now. Upon telling my digging bud Bill D, we both were anxious to get out and check it - problem is, snow was still covering the ground and a week of temps in the single digits provided an obstacle not usually dealt with in our area - FROZEN GROUND!!!!
We got out for a short 3 hour dig to check the 200 acre site and immediately found the sweet spot. The debris field at this site is extensive, the ground littered with brick, pipe stems, pottery, glass and an abundance of iron! The problem was, the site was frozen and like digging in concrete. My first target recovered was a beautiful VA Half Penny and believe it or not, my second was a 1798 Large Cent (Now disclaimer time - there is a ding, in fact a large scrape and it killed me, but we were literately digging in concrete). After that, we decided to spend just a short amount of time at the site only digging obvious great signals and those that were shallow (just a few inches) as there were PLENTY of good iffy and iron masked targets that were left for a thawed day. We then decided to roam the rest of the property to look for other sites. We found another interesting site and did not make it to a better looking higher ridge. Verdict is - we can't wait to go back!
My take for the short day was 13 buttons, the two coins, a complete early spectacle buckle (and matching piece) portions of shoe buckles, and pewter and lead. The Silver though not a coin was a nice silver ramrod guide to an early musket. I also dug two separate bottoms to brass trigger guards. All and all it was a successful recon and another potentially great site mapped. We both feel good about some killer pits being at this site - so stay tuned!
