Yesterday's Hunt yeilds two nice 1700's Coppers and silver!

I recently secured permission for a new site that I have been looking to get for over a year now. Upon telling my digging bud Bill D, we both were anxious to get out and check it - problem is, snow was still covering the ground and a week of temps in the single digits provided an obstacle not usually dealt with in our area - FROZEN GROUND!!!!

We got out for a short 3 hour dig to check the 200 acre site and immediately found the sweet spot. The debris field at this site is extensive, the ground littered with brick, pipe stems, pottery, glass and an abundance of iron! The problem was, the site was frozen and like digging in concrete. My first target recovered was a beautiful VA Half Penny and believe it or not, my second was a 1798 Large Cent (Now disclaimer time - there is a ding, in fact a large scrape and it killed me, but we were literately digging in concrete). After that, we decided to spend just a short amount of time at the site only digging obvious great signals and those that were shallow (just a few inches) as there were PLENTY of good iffy and iron masked targets that were left for a thawed day. We then decided to roam the rest of the property to look for other sites. We found another interesting site and did not make it to a better looking higher ridge. Verdict is - we can't wait to go back!

My take for the short day was 13 buttons, the two coins, a complete early spectacle buckle (and matching piece) portions of shoe buckles, and pewter and lead. The Silver though not a coin was a nice silver ramrod guide to an early musket. I also dug two separate bottoms to brass trigger guards. All and all it was a successful recon and another potentially great site mapped. We both feel good about some killer pits being at this site - so stay tuned!

HH

Dan

Good stuff Dan.

Had a blast checking out the new site Dan in spite of you giving me a good butt kicking (again!!). It was amazing how many good signals we had to pass up due to the ground conditions. I think this site will be extremely productive once we can get rid of all the snow and frozen turf. The fact that this is a bare dirt peanut field just adds to the excitement as we were able to see an unusually high concentration of brick, pottery, glass, pipe stems, and even 2 buttons that we eyeballed. An early, loaded pit has to be lurking nearby. I know you must have a great feeling of satisfaction after having this site on your radar for so long and having high hopes for an early site after all your painstaking research. Can't wait to get back and dig in that soft, sandy soil after the weather moderates.

nice finds! gz!

Good for you guys Dan. There is no better feeling to a relic hunter than finding a new, good site. When the ground is froze there is not much you can do about it except wait. I've been there. Love those early finds!

Nice hunt, Dan! So the VA half pennies are smaller than the normal copper? I didn't know that. I found one and it was rather small but appeared clipped or smashed on the edges so I wasn't sure on the size.

Looks like you guys will be posting some Killer Kolonial relics and coins as soon as the ground thaws! The ground up here is probably frozen solid a foot deep and we are getting more sub zero and single digit temps over the couple days. I am so :censored: sick of winter!!! So I have to live vicariously through you guys. Keep the posts coming!! Oh BTW, must not have been TOO much snow on the ground though, since you were able to eyeball all that stuff :laughing7:

No other way to put it, you guys did great! I commend you for digging through the frozen ground. Just before the ground froze I got permission to hunt a spot which turned up 6 large cents my first time there. The ground immediately froze to 6" and I'll be damned if I'm going gouge one of those bust quarters or halves that are waiting for me. Too frozen here in NY to dig. Just have to wait until spring. In the meantime I'll be keeping my eye out for all the goodies you find. The spot I got permission on is close to 130 acres and the original house, built in the 1790's is still in the same family. You can't consistently find old things if you're not detecting where people were 100+ years ago.

Correct Matt - they are smaller but about the same thickness - very cool coins. I had never found one until i moved to VA 3 years ago and now have found 9 ... and still counting he he

awesome. love the coins. they are in great shape for coming out of the ground. I found a couple that are totally trashed. be careful cleaning.

Thanks - they are as clean as they will get. I don't clean my copper coins other than a dry soft bristle toothbrush and at times a little scratching with a toothpick. The large cent would have been as green and pretty as the VA half had my shovel not clipped it.

Hey HGDan!! CONGRATS on some REALLY NICE COINS!! By the way, the object by the buckle appears to be a 1700's Pull Top!! He He!! GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Nice hunt Dan, I really like those spectacle buckle's you guys have been digging up, I have still not been able to put my coil over one yet. Hopefully this year will be the year for me.
Keep your fingers crossed for an early spring,
ZDD
