Hi All,

Went to an old park today and found a 1864 (? - I think it says 1864 - that's what I see) Indian Head and two others that I can't make out yet... Need some help on cleaning... Any assistance would be appreciated.

Also, my neice found a 1919 W Mercury Dime. Can anyone tell me more about these coins or where I can find out more about them.

Can anyone tell me more about how to properly clean old coins.

I will post pics in a few. Got to go give the girls a bath before bed...

Pics to follow.

Jade, read the cleaning and preservation section (go to the Home section and scroll down until you find it). Lots of good info there. The Red Book shows the 1864 (there are 3 different 1864's in only good condition they go from $12 to $65) So be very careful how you clean them as you could lower their value.

Hey Jade, the "W" on the front of the coin is the initial of the designer. Check the back of your Merc for a mint mark!! Congrats!!

Here are the pics...

Sorry - just uploaded them.

Nice finds, but be careful with the cleaning!

Yeap I see 1864.

However much you clean the others theres no detail left to find. Blanks - look like high copper content

Stick those pennies in a potato for a couple days and lightly brush off with a tooth brush or paper towel

Looks like you found a nice spot. I'd get back there and dig every signal. The deeper coins might sound choppy.

Congratulations!

I went back to that same park today and found this one:

Can't seem to make out the date. I think it says 1910 - but, not sure.

Found some wheaties too. My neice found another coin - but, we couldn't make out what it was. To worn...

I am very excited... Not sure how much will be there. Might have some deeper coins. The park was built in 1890. It's a very small park. We were there for about 7 hours total. There is a statue, canon and lamp post - if you get to close to any one - my signal starts jumping all over the place. Can't pinpoint anything... I am new at this - only been playing for a couple of months with it.

I am using a White's Prism II.

Thanks for all your help.

Sounds like you found a great spot! Keep finding them!

Congrats on your first old coins.

Great finds and looks like an awsome site...keep them com'in.

Jade, I think that "1910" coin is a large cent and the date is actually 1810 or 1818. Over on the left side of your screen, click on "home" and then click on the article about "Colonial Village Treasures." Look at the first picture in the article and compare your coin to the large cents shown there!

Nice finds there. I bet there's a bunch more. Might pay to dig all signals. That 1910 is a V nickel. I found an 1893 V yesterday. Way to go.

I sure was having trouble with my camera. Took a bunch just to get good ones.

I have to agree...I think it is early 1800s not 1900s. Congrats. Just because the park is not that old does not mean people were not losing coins there earlier.

Oops! Maybe it is a V nickel. There's an easy way to find out - is there a big "V" on the back?
