you'll shoot your eye out kid!!!!

I moved to NY about a month ago got board before the snow "god awful stuff" came and I found this in my new back yard. It is a Little Orphan Annie Decoder. I could not believe it. The second Pic is what I was told was a horse Mine used in the Civil war to throw riders from there horses during a charge. Thanks for looking and waiting on the white crap to go away.

That's odd, the second pic looks like a Sacajawea Dollar to me. Oh, you mean the thing on the left side of the photo? I don't have a clue what that is. hehehehe

Cool decoder. Congrats.

I've never heard of a "Horse Mine".

It looks like it would work though. You're off to a great start for a great shadowbox display.

A few nice finds! HH, Mike

The "horse mine" is called a caltrop, and yes they were used occasionally during the CW, usually strewn along roads and paths to disrupt calvary movements. Nice find as they were not very common and are not found often.

Caltrop. It's called a caltrop.

Edit- whoops- I see somebody beat me to the punch in providing that info.

Caltrops date back at least as far as the Middle Ages- over in Europe, they find medieval ones. Pretty nasty little things.

Actually "horse mine" is probably a pretty appropriate nickname for them.

Any of you have a kid sister or a daughter with the old timey jacks game? Y'know- with the little metal jacks and the rubber ball? Man, let me tell you, walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night and stepping on one of those @#%* jacks barefooted must be sort of like stepping on a caltrop was for a horse. Ow!

Yes indeed- a very neat find, and not a common one.

Re: you'll shoot your eye out kid!!!!

Caltrops have been documented as being used as far back as at least the ancient Romans. They would place them around their forts to reduce the pressure from enemy cavalry harrassing their foraging parties. They would also bury barbed versions, as well as rings of trenchs and pits, in front of the forts to hamper attacking foot soldiers. Folks tended to lose interest in charging when they get a barbed point stuck in their foot.

Consider that Roman soldiers would typically march all day and then build a fort at the end of it, and you get a good idea of how tough the legonairres were.
