Activity seems sparse in the Wyoming forum LOL.

Hello, new member here looking forward to digging up some history. I have 30+ years collecting coins, and maybe 1/2 a day on a MD. I live in Sheridan. I'm interested in going on some hunts and would love to tag along with some experienced MDer's, or just have a beer and pick your brain. Plus, I can carry alot, lol. My MD should be here sometime next week, it's nothing fancy but I've been off work all winter. Speaking of which, I don't think it's quite over yet. I think we are still in for a couple hummdingers as far as snow goes. Msg me for an email or phone #. Take care and happy hunting, Emmett.

Hey Emmett, welcome.
Not sure how experienced we are here, well Old Digger, maybe, but we are enthusiastic!

We should plan a outing for us Wyoming hunters, all we need is someone with an old homestead we can hunt...coughwyomediccough...:dontknow:

How about mid june, before it gets real hot out?

I never know my work schedule ahead of time, give me a heads up when something is going. My detector should be here this week, I'll post my first find. I got some ideas for places close to Sheridan. I just been poking around online for places. Have no idea what I'm doing but it might pan out. If I don't find coins or artifacts, I can now find my keys in the snow with no problem...

The black hole between Montana and Colorado.
Detector(s) used
Truffle seeking pig modified for metal.

The results have been so-so

When the pig fails me (which is often), I am relegated to a CTX3030 *sigh*. Like the dark ages or something.

That is probably possible. My family has some old trappers cabins from the 30s that are very easily accessible on Casper Mtn.

Only problem is, 5 feet of snow .

Our old ranch homestead is another option, but it is extremely difficult to access.

There are always options though, LOL

Ohhh, and BTW Scott, toy guns must be popular in Wyoming.

In my yard Saturday, I found an old toy gun as well. Not in very good shape, but still neat to see.

I also found a Bicentennial 50 cent piece. No real value, but shocking in my front yard.

Well the pro pointer is on a brown truck somewhere in town:hello2:

Can you even live in Wyoming if you don't own at least 2 rifles and a hangun?

Hi Scott, I'm no luckier than any of you guys, it's all about being in the right spot. Good to see you are finding a few as the ground warms up. I need to get one of those pinpointers also, good luck, and happy hunting.

All I can say about a pinpointer is...WOW...what a great tool. Went to the tot lot yesterday, It would have taken 3 times longer to cover the ground that I did, without it. I did find .48 in clad, not alot, but it was cold and the ground was mostly frozen.

$.48 towards a CTX!!!

Almost there. The CTX is an incredible machine.

SOOOOO, anyway. I might have gotten an interesting lead today from an OLD timer.

There used to be a town between Rawlins and MedBow back in the 1880s. It was called Carbon, and it was home to 30K residents.

One night, a fire started and burned the whole thing to the ground. Entire town GONE in 1 night and abandoned.

This old feller was friends with the guy that owned the land and apparently he was very friendly to diggers and such coming along and sifting the dirt. By buddy believes that the kids now own the land and would let people come on still.

From what this guy says, the old foundations, roads are still there and you can get a full plat map from the county office.

I will see what I can learn and maybe get a contact with the owner.

Sweet, lets go find it!
Well the yard just keeps on giving. 1911 and 1939D wheats tonight.

I'm getting better at hearing what the xterra is telling me, I was pretty sure what the pennies were before I dug. I have also dug nails pretty sure that it was iron, just confirming my guess. I have it set to 99 tones and it sure sings on rusty iron.

Short notice I know, but I'm heading out to Alcova to search a bit tomorrow. Probably at 8ish in the AM.

If folks were in the area and had time, let me know.

Well I'm unavailable, but thanks for asking.

On the home front, I hit a park tonight and dug $1.24 in clad.

$1.72 in the ctx fund now!!!

Here some info on the ghost town of Carbon. ''Carbon, once a coal mining town. In the 1880's, as many as 600 miners worked there, often sleeping in the mines at night when there was a threat of an indian attack. When mining ended in 1902, the town was abandoned. Only the wind whipped cemetery remainds.''

I thought this might help.

Very interesting. It varies quite a bit from what the old feller was saying.

Now I really want to go visit to learn the truth. Open ended mystery.
