Another site in Carbon Co. is the ruins of Fort Fred Steele. It is near the almost deserted town of Walcott. The fort was established in 1868 to afford protection for travelers on the Overland route. The post was abandoned in 1886. Only a few weatherbeaten log frame buildings may remain.

Another site in Carbon Co. is the site of Fort Halleck. It is on a private ranch near Elk Mountain. Established in 1862, the fort was also a strategic post and station on the Overland Stage route.

To keep it TH related I realy think I like my 6" coil better than the 9" on my 705

Hey guys,
Add one more in Wyoming to the list. Apparently Sott and I hit a few of the same forums and he invited me over here. I am in southern Campbell county where we lease a small place and run a few cows. I'm also a welder in the oilpatch.

We bought a Whites MXT last fall so I have'nt had a chance to use it or learn it yet. We are both newbies. I do have access to a few spots to hunt as I am friends with quite a few other ranchers around here and alot of places have old abandoned homesteads. As a matter of fact, the place we are on has a really cool history. Each year they used to send out about 5000 hd of cattle, 2000 hd of horses and 10,000 hd of sheep from our corrals headed for back east. Right where our house sits used to be an old stage stop too. I am very interested in Wyoming history and would like to get out and do some hunting in other parts of the state.

Ya, welcome to the site.

There aren't a lot of us, but a it seems that a few detectorists exist here.

I was actually hitting a Casper park yesterday, and some dude walked over with his detector and started a conversation. Sounds like he hits the parts fairly regularly. I chuckled a little as he told me that he pounded out the park I was in. Not even 10 seconds before he walked up, I pulled a quarter and dime out of the ground LOL.

Anyway, I think some things will get organized this summer for anybody to attend if they want. It is SOOOOOOOOOO very close to being acceptable weather. I hit Alcova for 8 hours yesterday. Beautiful with just a little ice on the water. I found a bunch of clad and MILLIONS of pulltabs, but nothing if interest.

I saw where some of you are into ham. One of my goals for this year is to get my ticket. A friend of mine is into it and because of interest on another forum he started Prepared Ham I t is a pretty cool site geared towards prepping and helping newcomers get their feet wet.

Apparently Scott and I hit several of the same forums which doesnt really surprise me as most folks in Wyoming have alot of the same views on things. I'm really looking forward to meeting up with you guys. Do any of yall do much shooting or hunting?

Yup, Wyoming is a small world. I have lived here my whole life, and it seems I run into the same circle of people quite often.

I used to hunt a lot, but with the price of fuel/license/travel/processing/storage, I have all but given up on it. Too bad of a back to pack elk out anymore.

I still do shoot quite a bit. It has tapered off with the ammo shortage in my favorite calibers, but I still frequent the range. I used to competitively shoot in IDPA and IPSC 3 gun.

I hear ya on the bad back. In 09 I was building a powerplant here and I fell breaking my back. It has been a long recovery and Im still not as good as I was. At 40 years old I'm sure age has a little to do with it. It has really affected the amount of time I get to spend horseback and starting colts as well.

So I had an idea sitting here this morning sipping my joe.

Copper would make a good soft probe, but, you say it will bend!

I also flintknap, I make a copper flaking tool, now the trick is to make the copper wire not bend. here is the trick.

Get a 2 foot length of ground wire, just like whats on the side of your house, chuck one end into your drill, put the other end into a vise and spin. The spinning "work hardens" the copper and makes it stronger. I have a piece in the garage and when I finish the coffee I'm going to give it a try, I think for a 2 or 3" probe it may work out, I'll let ya know.
