Day two at a new site that I first hit last night about 7:00. Yesterday gave me 2 coppers and a bunch of buttons. This morning I headed back for a more concentrated search. Three more buttons. Silver gilt Dandy button, Rich gilt one piece button and a military button that I have seen a hundred times before........... Some one please educate me on this one.
I think I have one more copper :help: One side has a bust facing right, the reverse has what looks like an eagle, upright with wings spread. I have no idea what it is, coin, token? Very thin and slightly larger than a US Quarter.
You will notice a 1980 Quarter in the pick. That damn thing came from 6" down, in the best part of the field and had me going for a while :o

Anyway...... Here are some pics. Not too much cleaning yet. I want to ID first if possible.

You have a great spot there to hunt, so far have no idea what the funky copper is, but it sure has possibilites of being a goodie, something from the 1790s error, no earlier, could be later.

VP, you had another killer day out! That military button is the day maker. IP will come on and give you an ID on the button.

As for the copper, it looks like a counterfeit King George III bust. The eagle on the back has me stumped, though. I wonder if it was stamped on the reverse after that side was worn smooth?

The button appears to be War of 1812 era, Albert's GI 61 Milita, 1 piece with border and rope edging. An eagle, shield at side, 16 stars encircling, on an oval lined field. Backmark listed in book is Imperial Standard 23mm ( sure could be other backmarks)

The funky bird copper, well, the Eagle is similar to the 1798-1802 Infantry Officer button, the denticles sure are toothy(similar to Machin's Coppers), and the bust might be GW or someone else of that time frame, this is one interesting old copper......

That button is what I dream of every night before detecting. I absolutely love War of 1812 era buttons. Another great post from way up in Vermont.

HOLY S**T !! How did you ever come up with the ID :notworthy:
I am anxious to learn more. Rarety? From who does the token come from? Looks like early 1800's.
Thanks once again for the help

Blacksmith Coppers: Here is some sentences from "Forgotten Coins of the North American Colonies" by William T Anton and Bruce Kesse

A genre of coppers circulating and generally heretofore accepted as being produced in Canada, consisting of a variety of major types, sub-types and varieties, most notably George II and George III, British and Irish. The majority of these were probably made in the first half of the 19th century, and are noteworthy in that the dies were prepared such as to produce coppers with a well worn appearance( with little or no appearance of legends) in order to imply previous circulation and facilitate future acceptance........
The are halfpence size but are extremely thin and obviously light weight.
