Thanks for all the feedback on an earlier post. I finalized my airline reservations and will be getting 6 days to explore the beaches from the Cape to the south. I am going to stay in the Ft Pierce - Vero Beach area. Probably at the Sandhurst or Royal Inn. I have to have internet access in case some business comes up. Anyway, my wife told me to go by myself so I do not have to rent a second car or be looking at my watch while I am with her wondering when I can sneak away. Anyway, I think I will be hiking a lot of the beaches and trying to get to some less detected areas.

I appreciate the people on this site for motivating me. It was a toss up between Arizona (gold) and Florida. I figure that I have to go visit family in Arizona in March, so I will take a day or two and head out NW of Phoenix. I just have to do a little business on these trips so I can write them off!

Thanks for all the location hints. I have purchased 5-6 books, including Singer's Shipwrecks of Florida. maps, and printed some Google Earth shots to identify some access and potential hunting areas. I hope to run into some other people out detecting. Maybe even check out a couple of the off-shore salvage boats! Yea, I am peaked and wanting to get out of the snow and to warmer weather for a week.

Have a great time, I am in Colorado occasionally to pan for gold at Idaho Springs. Are you near there? Make sure you bring sun screen SPF 45 and bug spray. I'm sure the mosquito's, fire ants and noseems will relish your rich northern blood and will tell their friends too. Hit the St. Lucie museum on Seaway drive just across the bridge on the island, Taffi Fishers treasure museum in Sebastian on Hwy 1 and McLarty's museum on A1A just before the Sebastin River Inlet bridge. This is the original site of the Spanish salvage camp from 1716 when they were salvaging the wrecks. Also look just south of there for Kip Wagner's cabin I think it is the 4 building to the south of the museum, that's what earned the wreck site the name of the Cabin wreck.
 

Congratulations! You have chosen the time of year when we have our lowest low tides, and also experience the strongest storm/wave action short of hurricanes. Unfortunately, I will also be out there in front of you removing EVERYTHING of value..........

MoTwister: I will definitely see the museum. Looking forward to that. Love the history of the area. As for my rich northern blood, I am from Oklahoma (Tulsa). The chiggers near the water in Oklahoma used to eat noseems for lunch! But, I'll admit, it is irritating having bugs flying around your face looking to feed. I will definitely have bug spray and SP45 with me. Living this high in the mountains, you do get spoiled. Not really any bugs up here at any time of the year. Oh, I am not making any negative comments about Missoura (Missouri if you are near St Louis)! My wife works in Idaho Springs. We live about an hour away. I like to drop her at work and spend the day in the Central City/Blackhawk area. Casinos and metal detecting!

Bill: I hope you are in front of me. I will hold up all of the finds that you missed! I do hope I get to meet some other people detecting. I am really getting excited about coming over there. Seems like 5 weeks is a long time.

I have been to Joplin many times. My 1st wifes parents live there. Used to hit Fred and Reds chili every time! I also did my Master's Thesis 20+ years ago on the Tar Creek mining area. I was there when the acid mine drainage first surfaced. Joplin really grew. A lot of Medical facilities there. I miss that part of the country. I spent a lot of time at Grand Lake and Tenkiller when I lived there. I still have brothers and a sister in Tulsa. While I may be 3-4 feet of snow at once, I do not miss the ice!

Yes we had a heck of a ice storm 2 weeks ago. We got 1 inch or more, that is the worst storm that we have had in the 32 years that I have lived here. I lost almost all the trees that I had. Anyways Fred and Reds is still here, I ate there the other day. Its for sale for 1 million, but no takers so far. All the mining area is bring reclaimed and built on. Pitcher and Cardin OK are all doing a buy out now. The Joplin area is really growing up, the building boom started about 20 years ago with no signs of slowing down. If you get down this way let me know. Norman

MoTwister:.......Wow, you mentioned Cardin, Oklahoma....that town was named after Oscar Cardin, my dau's 2nd great Uncle. He was the son of Thomas J. Cardin and Esther Archangel LaFontain(e) and the sibling of Sarah Cathern (Cardin) Staton, as well as 4 others. They were of Quapaw, Ottwawa and Miami Indians ancestors. Sarah is my dau's 2nd great grandmother and I have a picture of a picture of her in her Indian attire that is in a museum some place around there. (my dau's lineage spans the Richardville and LaFontain(e) Miami Indian Chiefs and if research has lead us in the correct direction...she is a descendant of Little Turtle!!!)

Oscar was born William Oscar Cardin 22 Oct 1878 and died 19 Nov 1949.

They owned alot of stock and land in that area relating to the Lead and Zinc Mines.

There is a photo of him in the book "Forty Years Among the Indians" by Jeremiah Hubbard, a missionary who worked among the OK tribes.  Oscar is 34 yrs old in the picture and dressed in a suit and quite handsome.  His tribe is listed as Quapaw.  He was quite dapper and rich and used to hand out money on the streets.  The Cardin family was quite wealthy from the lead and zinc mines.

Camcolo, PM me when you get closer to coming to Florida. You mentioned wanting to check out some of the salvage boats, I can give you a tour of our boat, the Conquistador in Sebastian, and also show you around Fort Pierce where you can see many like the infamous Rio Bravo, Endeavor, and the legendary Virgalona.

Yep, Jason is quite a tour guide! That is the offseason for salvage boats, as the weather is at its worst with cold fronts rolling through. NorEasters are the best at eating the beach away, so get out and look along the beaches. Steve.
 

Yes, I plan on seeing as much as I can. This is my first vacation in 3 years and one doing what I really enjoy. I appreciate the willingness of Jason to spend some time showing me around. I will have to buy him a really good meal! The snow is really starting to get to me. We have another storm moving through tonight. They are coming every couple of days. I guess the skiers like it!
 

I'll be in Fl. on the 7th Feb.(one week) Wife & I each bought MD's for christmas and the ground here in Wis. is just a little too hard (and under 12" of snow). We were looking to do the treasure coast also... have heard bits and pieces that there are some beaches you cannot hunt in that area. Anyone know more about that???? I don't want to have my new MD taken away on it's first day!!!

I don't know of any beaches that you cant legally hunt, other than federal property like Canaveral seashore.
I haven't had a problem anywhere.
I was checking the tide charts and it looks like the lowest tides will be the week of the 18th of Feb. But there are negative tides when you will be here. Check out this site.

Lat42, I'm sitting on the beach at Lat28n, sunny, light sea breeze and about 76 degrees, just a tad warmer than the water surface temp.

I'm sitting on my couch, watching the Packer win, just finished snowblowing 7" and running out of room to put it, the snow is 12" above my mailbox. :)

It is 12 hours until my plane lifts off. I will be landing in Orlando at 1:30pm and should be in Fort Pierce by 4:00pm tomorrow! I am peaked. Snowing here (8600 Feet ABSL)! First vacation in a while. Hope to hit the beach quickly (though I will have to see if there is a place within walking distance to watch the Super Bowl). See y'all on the beaches next week.

Camcolo, a great place for breakfast is Mickey's restaurant on Hwy 1. It opens at 5 and serves a very big breakfast. And a great place to see the sunrise is just down the road from the Sand Hurst at the St. Lucie county museum parking lot on the dock, you can see it rise from down the Inlet or go to the jetty at the east end of Seaway dr. You should get some great pictures. Norman
 

Thanks, I will look for Mickey's. I ended up at the Royal Inn. Great Ocean Views and a small little hotel. Nice rooms and all the amenities at a great price. I think I will begin working the beach where I am tomorrow. It looks like I have miles of shoreline to the south. This is really great! Warm, ocean, met great people at a local grill at dinner. Stupid question, but what exactly are no-see-ums? No, I do not really want to experience them to get an understanding. At lakes I used to go to there were chiggers. They were on the grass (did not fly) and when they burrowed under the skin they were like really bad mosquitos. I am going to get some deep woods off, but was not sure exactly what I was to expect. Do they fly or are they on the ground? Been on a lot of beaches, but never ran across these.

The mountains have their own unique pests.... mainly RVs that drive about 10 mph!
