FIELDS FROZE SOLID....So 8 hrs of shore hunting....LEAD SCUD MISSILES !!!!

HEY GUYS AND GALS

This is a combined 3 hunts totalling 8 hrs.

Tried the fields today.. 2 of them and both frozen solid.... so went to plan "B" and investigated a new beach.

Started off slow then Ed hit a musket ball which I thought was odd for this location..... then I started coming across the BIG LEAD SCUD MISSILES.

They are big and heavy..... I wouldn,t want to be the one shooting them off my shoulder. Ed picked up 12 of them today. Dunno why there was so many of these big caliber bullets there.
And the spot had been hunted within the last couple days also...there was holes dug everywhere.

ED found 1 old worn copper and I had 3.... only 1 that had any detail is the 1859 Canadian ONE CENT... looks like it has the BIG 9. 1 year off the key date of first mint.
Too bad the ink wells top is missing ....think this beach may be in need of a return trip.

Had 2 buttons but not from this new beach....one pewter...it has writing on the back ...any ideas ??

What kinda gun would these big bullets come from ?

Wasn,t bad for a shot in the dark...... I enjoyed it...lotsa targets but also a lot of iron.Wish we had been there before the other guy had already hunted it.

Some of your lead finds are indeed .577 Enfields, but not all of them. Some of them are post CW-era cast bullets, specifically the left-hand 3 in pics 18 and 19. The larger of those are probably .44 caliber, though the last two rounds on the right of those photo's could be CW-era. If you've got or can get ahold of a micrometer and get some measurements they'll be easier to positively identify.

Interesting group of finds Aqua, especially since the area was your 3rd round draft pick for the day.

Tried one of my sites yesterday and broke my shovel. Actually tore the tempered steel :-) supposed to be warm all week so maybe next weekend. Were supposed to get 2 or3" of rain today so whatever snow is left should be gone. Good hunt hunt buddy. Soon we will be at our dry land sites. I secured permission today at a 1660s site that many have tried to get permission for. Think he was impressed with my intimate knowledge of the history of his property. Hopefully he doesn't change his mind

I don,t have a micrometer but probably should get one...come in handy for this hobby.

LOL...sounds like your ground is still frozen too or you are digging BIG IRON looking for that chest of treasure.!!

Raining here now...supposed to all day...fields should be good to go in a couple days...I HOPE !

Agreed...I looked up the enfield 57.....these bullets look a lot bigger . There is no crimp marks on them to indicate they were in a casing either.

I,ll post a pic with size comparison on a coin and musket ball.

The pewter button is most likely 1812 military, very little chance it's not, so too bad about the condition. The backmark is Nutting & Son Covent Garden, which as I said in your Royal Marine button post is the most popular backmark for an 1812 Marines button. So you should look closely for the remains of an anchor. (given one has turned up already)

A cast pewter civilian button with that backmark is something I really would not expect to see. Generally plain cast pewter buttons will not have a makers mark, and just the way that one is made screams military.

I remember you saying about back markings on a previous button or lack of ... so was really intrigued when I seen the writing.

I seem to be on a roll with buttons that are in bad shape.

This one was about a mile from the 1st one.
