HEY GUYS AND GALS

This is a combined 3 hunts totalling 8 hrs.

Tried the fields today.. 2 of them and both frozen solid.... so went to plan "B" and investigated a new beach.

Started off slow then Ed hit a musket ball which I thought was odd for this location..... then I started coming across the BIG LEAD SCUD MISSILES.

They are big and heavy..... I wouldn,t want to be the one shooting them off my shoulder. Ed picked up 12 of them today. Dunno why there was so many of these big caliber bullets there.
And the spot had been hunted within the last couple days also...there was holes dug everywhere.

ED found 1 old worn copper and I had 3.... only 1 that had any detail is the 1859 Canadian ONE CENT... looks like it has the BIG 9. 1 year off the key date of first mint.
Too bad the ink wells top is missing ....think this beach may be in need of a return trip.

Had 2 buttons but not from this new beach....one pewter...it has writing on the back ...any ideas ??

What kinda gun would these big bullets come from ?

Nice finds. I like the 1859 lc. I found a few myself but still haven't found a 1858. Your fields should thaw soon. For me I got some good luck and more bad luck the past little while. The good luck is the fields in my area have mostly all thawed out, I got some nice new spots to try and most digging around my area is getting good. The bad luck is it was such a brutal winter and it's finally getting better I can't get the time I need to get out hunting because of work. Arggggg....

The large musket balls I have are a little bit larger in diameter...by about 2 mm.

Sry...not questioning your knowledge as I am positive you know 100x more than me on this stuff...but the bullets I see for the 57mm are in shell casings and they just look liike the leads are a lot smaller than these.:dontknow:

NEWBS:tongue3:

But this is how ya learn !!! (I learn )

I can only comment on what I can see on your pictures; the smooth sided conical bullets (not the ringed ones) are very typical of the ones I've found in the past which are Enfield bullets. I'm certain different varieties exist, and yours may very well be something else

The LG cent is very good condition for a saltwater find...has the large 9 I think...helps the value...but wish it was 1958 !!

Was talking with a few fisherman in LFA 34 they are getting antsy to start catching some lobster again..so ya, you will be busy very shortly..within next 2 weeks for sure.

I will be getting my gear ready middle of teh mnth..set them by May 1st...we go til July 31 for the spring season...then it looks like I,ll be retiring. Getting outta it while things are at a high..better than trying to sell when things are at a low.

OK..ty for the extra info..muchy appreciated..

Wouldn,t they have marks around their circumference where they woulda been crimped into the casings to hold them ?

They are muzzle loaded into a rifle with a ram rod. No shell casings like modern bullets.

Minie balls, of which the majority of those bullets are, did not have casings; they were cartridges, the lead bullet was wrapped in a wax paper tube with a measured amount of powder in it. The end of the paper was ripped or bit off, and the powder was then dumped down the barrel of the gun, the paper and slug were then rammed into the barrel with the ramrod , the paper acted as the wadding, earlier rifles used patches and different materials for wadding , and then fired. Most of the rifles of that design were ignited by percussion caps struck by the hammer.

I know it's the truth but I'm going to pretend I didn't hear anything about the busy lobster season coming up! :)

When I look up enfield 57 it shows a breech loading gun with cartridges.

Ms Beep if you can help me dig that bad boy up right now I will split it with you. But you have to carry it out :-)
I was actually marking my signals on the snow covered field and writing the depth too as I was gonna go back and dig them. First damn attempt at digging a hole I have a temper tantrum and destroy my shovel. Maybe I need some anger management classes (as long as it doesn't interfere with my treasure hunting time)
Next weekend I will be posting something!!!!!!!! It may be a pile if junk but it will be something. As long as my house is still here. I live on a river and were getting hammered with rain

That woulda been fun hiding in the bushes watching you throw your hissy fit and smashing the shovel......are you experiencing withdrawals ?

Them locations should be thawed by end of tuesday at the latest.

So would you say that they are the same size(diameter) as the large musket balls you have? Or are they smaller? assuming they are 69 caliber( the musket balls)
Actually they are the same size of my second largest round ball. Here is a pic of the largest and second largest ball next to an Enfield bullet.

I would go out to my shop and get my verniers to get an exact mesurement but it's freezing rain outside right now and I'm a wimp.

We usually find a few different sized musket balls on our sites, larger ones are typically English bore and the smaller ones are French bore, or Minie ball sized; so it makes sense to me that the conical bullet is an Enfield and the musket ball you have shown is if French origin
