Hello, all. This is my first post, so let's hope this works! A few weeks ago I decided to go out into the woods where I have had some great luck for the past few months to focus on an area next to an old walking path. I had found an 1866/1867 shield nickel in the vicinity the week prior, so I thought that I would take my time and grid off a section. About ten minutes in, I got a strong, repeating penny/dime signal at about 4 inches next to a couple of pines. I dug the plug, pinpointed the target, and then realized that it was tiny- at which point I thought "could this be a half-dime?" And it was. An 1848. It is now one of the center pieces of my little boy's rapidly growing coin collection! Also included pics of the Shield Nickel- it's pretty corroded, but you can make out the shield, wreath, and on the obverse, the "5" circled by stars with rays between. Will post more recent finds from this section of woods- including the story behind my avatar- found a bent 1858-O half in the same area. Thanks for reading.

First of all, welcome to TreasureNet. I think you'll like it here.

Second... NICE FIND!

Third, what an excellent way to use your better coin finds. What could be better than sharing them with your kids? Someday: "My dad found this with his metal detector and he gave it to me for my collection."

Well done all around.

Chuck

Thanks, Chuck. Almost everything I find is his- I deposited the $234.50 in clad that I found in 2012 into his bank account a few weeks ago. Looking forward to taking him out with me to detect when he's big enough (if he wants to)!

Great job on the shield nickel and beautiful seated half dime! Those woods are being very good to you. Keep at it, I can't wait to see what you find next.

MiSter G,

First off you are being a great Dad sharing your hobby with your child/children. All your children want is to be loved, included, cared for/about and your sharing shows all that at once. I would hazard a bet that once he's located and dug one of your finds he will be hooked. After all, a detector is another electronic gadget in a hobby that at times pays for itself. Keep doing what you are doing.

Second your half dime is way cool and in quite good shape and I'm waiting for the story on the bent half! I knew a detectorist in CA who found a similar situation in that it was a bent silver half dollar but his had been shot with a .45 caliber likely revolver.

Thank you for sharing...........63bkpkr
