Never ever would I have thought what happened, would happen. Late last night, while using my new Tesoro sand shark, (4 months old) on a beach called Singer island here in south florida, I was confronted by 2 males with masks on. They had crazy Halloween masks. They had a knife and asked me to empty my pockets. They took my wallet, metal detector, scoop, iPhone , and even my freaking car keys. Then they told me if I moved at all they would charge at me and cut me "for real" as they said. So they ran off, and I waited like 30 mins. I slowly walked back to where I parked, called my parents at a 7 eleven near by and we filed a report. I honestly think they're going to find these guys. Im checking CL everyday and things like that. It really sucks cause I'm in collage and it was like a side job/hobby I really enjoyed lol. But I'm alright, and that's all that matters. I'll keep you guys updated on whatever happens. For now, no more detecting for me! I can't wait to post there mug shots on here once they get them :P I've got the serial number on that baby written down so soon enough I'll get my detector back!!!! I hope :(

The few rare occasions I have had someone in the park act strangely I didnt let them get very close before my cell phone was already out and I pretended to make a call. This after having a homeless guy follow me a round asking for money and wouldn't go away. Some folks out there should be in a hospitals but the chemically and mentally challenged are not taken care of anymore. These guys were thugs, but the cell phone is my binky. I also have a small hd video camera attacked to my detector, I video the strange ones and they never have a clue. Those guys know that beach and will be back. The camera may not have worked at night, but the phone could have. I have a program on my phone in case it is stolen. It will give you a map and location. Hope this helps. Sorry for your loss. I wouldnt let it get me down. There is bad people everywhere, its a numbers game. Its not about if, its about when anymore.

If your going to night hunt you have to stay aware of your surroundings and if your not armed you should hunt with a partner, never alone.

I live in Fl, I have night hunted many times, when I do I am always armed. I have a CWL license and if night hunting I am carrying at least my 9mm. I don't go deep in water at night, maybe knee deep at most my so pistol is safe from saltwater.

Glad you made it safely out of your encounter....

We will NOT go quitely into the night!

It may have ended much worse if anyone was caring fire arms. Most likely they will find the scumbags and the kid will get the detector back. It is important to keep in mind that for every story like this, there are many many night hunters that have not had any problems. Justkeepdigging, I am sorry that you had to go through such a scary experience, but glad that you are ok!
It might have ended much worse for the punks if the victim had been carrying.

It would have ended much worse for the thugs doing the robbing, see they would have brought a knife to a gun fight....

Under Fl law the use of lethal force would have been completely justified in that situtation, an individual is allowed to use deadly force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of bodily threat, without an obligation to retreat. Being robbed and threatened with a knife falls under that belief....

I have no symphony for thugs at all.

Congratulations on having survived an attack by the most dangerous predator on earth, “Your fellow man”.
You did the right thing, especially with odds two to one against you.
Thank you for alerting T Net Members when and where the attacked occurred so that they are aware.
Why not post the serial number(s) on T Net and notify Tesoro in the event the Sand Shark is returned for repair.
You learned the hard way that night time is crime time. Be sure and follow NJ Cigarman’s advice and hunt at night with a partner, If this is not possible, hunt where there is security such as the beach in front of a resort, where there are guests on the beach. However, this can just as easily happen anywhere or time no one is around to witness/help as you are most vulnerable.
Sadly, the English language does not have words that can be posted to express my contempt for such low lifes that deprive us of our freedom. I would like to point out that anyone who buys second hand, especially on Gregs list, without determining who the true owner, even though he or she did not commit the crime shares the blame and shame

Momma always said nothing good happens after 12am!

A few years ago, I was taking some long exposure night images for a college class. A drunk comes from nowhere screaming and kicking the tripod holding the camera. All I had was a set of keys in my pocket. A week later, sort of the same incident, but the guy was likely more interested in selling/buying drugs. Vowed to never, never, never be unarmed again in those circumstances.

Those two incidents prompted me to get my concealed carry. Today, I avoid ATM's at night, pumping gas at night, and regret anytime I need to go to the store for items at night. It's not fear, but just awareness and increasing the odds in my favor.

On the few occasions I've been out detecting really late, I'm amazed at what I see around 3am. You can always tell the lower life forms when you see the oncoming lights from the beach patrol. They leave the beach quickly.

I was closer to a pitch black residential section a few weeks ago as the sun set and I made my way back to the truck. I don't think they were used to, or appreciated me being there. A few walking their dogs etc... After consideration, I wont go back unless there is a Holy Grail type piece I'm looking for.

We have enough well lit hotels, and I always pick one and grid both the slope and the wet sand. A well lit hotel helps because that usually means people. Summer means lots of people.

I'm always packing at night, but I catch myself not always being aware when detecting. I find a something with deep pockets work pretty well and stealthy packing a snubbie. You almost always have the drop on somebody if you see them approaching... though I would thing my accuracy would be crapola.

A partner? Might just end up being two victims or a witness.

Sorry for your loss, but grateful you lived to share the experience.

Your experience (like mine) was likely random but the odds increased by being alone on the beach.

While I agree with that wholeheartedly having to deal with the likely end result is something a lot more difficult than the loss of a detector

At my age I have little patience for punks or thugs, I will not tolerate being threatened or accosted. If I feel I or my wife are threatened I have the means and ability to defend my self....

Agreed, endanger my family or me..
I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Sorry to hear about this and hope they find your stuff and the guys that took it.

I always carry at least a 380 auto to leave an impression and hope it helps the police find them at the emergency room.

I also fill the hollow points with Ghost Pepper Juice and then let it dry. I'm not sure if it will have the same affect as it does on my tongue, but I hope so.

Sorry to hear what happened to you. At least they didn't hurt you. A couple of weeks ago I had about $10,000 worth of gold finds stolen from my car. Some low life POS watched me leave the bank and hide it in the spare tire well of my car. He then followed me and broke into the car while I was in a grocery store for about ten minutes. This kind of thing really shakes you up. I feel a lot more vulnerable now. I learned a hard lesson and will try to be a lot more diligent in the future. I hope you get your things back but don't get your hopes up. I can't even get the cops to work my case at all. They told me that there have been over 34,000 other cases so far this year in my county. These crooks get away with it and are only more encouraged to steal again.

I heard about this! I may have not lost 10 thousand , but for a 20 year old college kid, who lives on his own, it really was crappy. The cops are pretty much telling me the same thing. That there's many other cases and they will keep looking. I know there are a lot of more important things going on but I hope they find my Sand Shark
