About twenty years ago my fiancee's late husband was given this bayonet and scabbard by a friend who metal detected for relics. The friend told him that he dug it at a Civil War battlefield. When I first saw it I had my doubts, mainly because the blade has very little rust and the wood handle is intact. However, the fact that the blade was encased in the scabbard may explain the lack of serious rust on the blade.
The blade is 15 inches long and the bayonet with the handle is 20 inches. There are no markings on it that I can see.
I am looking for an ID for the piece. Due to the absence of markings, if indeed it is from the Civil War I would assume that it is Confederate, but it very well may not be from that period. Any and all input is welcome.
