Katia Gives Up Soviet Gold!!! Help From One of Our Russian Friends!

I found this HONKER of a gold ring today marked 583 (which is 14K) in a star with a hammer and sickle. It weighs 7.3 grams so it is around $280 in melt value! It also has another symbol or may be russian writing, so I am hoping someone can tell me what the symbol represents.

This one was uncovered by the strong surf at the shore by Tropical Storm Katia!

From 1959 to 1992 the government inspection hallmark changed to a five-point star with the hammer and sickle inside it. “583” was the most commonly-used type of gold in the Soviet Union.

Thanks for the info on the hallmark. There is also some other writing, which is not so clear in the photo. I will try to copy it from the soviet alphabet..

Thanks Dale! This was a beach find, so I was using my Excalibur. Of course I had to test it with my V3i to see what the VDI would be. I actually did it yesterday, and it came up as a 49, right there with the Indian Heads, Zincolns and mini balls!

Most of those scratches will polish out. Since there is so many, and so deep, a jeweler may want to charge a little. Most jewelers polish many pieces for no charge. It will look great buffed.
