Older than "Colonial Copper" - UPDATE

On my way up to visit my brother in southern Wisconsin this past Friday, I spent 1-1/2 hours
metal detecting before my hunt was terminated >:( by the high winds and heavy rain. . .

When I found this, my initial thought was that it was a piece of scrap metal but when I saw the
the oxidized-copper patina, wishful thinking entered my mind that this may possibly be related
to the "copper culture" period in the Wisconsin/Michigan area.

I posted this in the "American Indian Artifacts" section of the forum and some members suggest
that this may be a copper celt. . . if it is, this will be my best find ever.


UPDATE:
Yesterday I received confirmation from two archeologists that this is
indeed a copper Celt (cold and/or hot hammered) that was likely made
and/or used sometime between 4,000 BC and 500AD.

(and yes, I'm still on cloud nine)

making the BANNER. . . I am truly honored. This has been an exciting week and

As far as dollar value? I'm really not sure.

During the last few days, I've had several conversations with the State Archeologist who has been
VERY helpful and would like to set up a future meeting with me at the site where the recovery was
made. . . I'll keep everyone posted as to what happens. . . hopefully, it will all be good.

It was about 30-meters from a stream and only down about 5-inches deep. . . (I had a fight with a tree root in the process. . . I won ;D)

Definitely a museum quality piece,make sure you document exactly where it was found with photos and GPS for those in the field of science, who will undoubtedly want this information.

Did you weigh it?

I spoke with the State Archie this morning and he plans on meeting me out there sometime in the next several weeks. . . right now he's been busy at other sites with all the flooding that's occurred. Oh, the weight. . . I got to do that tomorrow; Thanks for reminding me.

He seems very cool about this entire situation. . . and as to whether I would be allowed back for any future searches in this area, well, I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it :). . . good question though.

Awesome find!

That's one thing WI has going for it--the best odds of the oldest metal finds in the U.S.

Not to ask you to give anything away but what kind of site was that found at? Riverbank or otherwise near water?
